Mosaic overview
Jul 2019 • Couples
The museum provided a good overview of the restoration of mosaics. It had copies of some of the mosaics from other buildings around Ravenna. There was also a video that showed the restoration process. Most signage was provided in English. There was also a section with current day mosaics adjoining to the main structure that was interesting.

All about mosaics
Dec 2018 • Solo
This is a small museum with several exhibits describing the history of mosaics. Reproductions, paintings/drawings and a few original pieces walk you through the history of mosaics. Worth a short visit if you are in the area.

Not a museum
Oct 2018 • Couples
It's a collection of copies, pictures of mosaics, and contemporary art. Contains some tools and samples of tesseras as well.
Nothing worth of visiting if you have average education.
Might be interesting for children.

If you like to know how things are made

I wish there was a little more in the way of English translation but it was fascinating. The collection of the 1960’s works themed on Dante’s work was an added bonus

Not a Place for a Car Gear head
May 2018 • Couples
Our cruise ship dropped anchor in Ravenna. It was the jump off point for Bolonga,
Maranello, San Marino, and other places. GF wanted to visit San Marino and I had no problem with that except this country is on a very steep mountain top. There was no way my GF would be able to hike her way up to the town. The ship also offered a tour of the Ferrari Factory in Maranello but the price was prohibitive and didnt include a factory tour. Whereas if I could find away to get to Bologna I would have gone on the Lamborghini factory tour (not offered by the ship). Anyhow getting around the region was expensive so we ended up touring Ravenna.
The GF decided she wanted to go to the Tamo mosiac museum. It was an easy walk from the center of town (we were provided a tour map of attractions). Street names are found on the corner or buildings and there are some tourist signs posted pointing you in the right direction.
The Tamo Museum building does not jump out at you so keep your eyes open. Upon entering the museum and paying the 4 Euro's for entree you come into the main room of the 14th century church.
The museum is very well laid out showing process of mosaic making in the various stages. There are examples of preliminary pictures, copies of famous mosaics as well as parts of ancient mosaics.
Not my first choice of places to see but it wasn't that bad either.

I learned so much!
Oct 2017 • Solo
I went there during the Notte d'Oro, and the ticket to the Domus dei Tappetti di Pietra was included with the guided tour.
I learned so much about the history and usage of mosaics. I didn't really think about modern mosaics before that. The guide was incredibly good at her job, telling us everything about the mosaics, without ever being boring.
The pieces exhibited are beautiful.
I definitely recommend going.

Interesting displays of how mosaics and the materials are made.

Old church converted to a museum, and now includes a mix of ancient, reproduction, and instructional mosaics, with interesting displays of how mosaics and the materials are made.WARNING: Funky hours, subject to closure for special events without any notice or help from the workers, who will not tell you that they are going to be closed. Part of our mosaic tour of Ravenna. We started with a list and only actually missed one attraction in three days. Every attraction except one out of town was reached by walking in close proximity to the historic city center. We did not move the car one time, other than to arrive and leave town. Print some papers in advance from the internet and carry them with you to help you understand what you are looking at. Buy a nice photo book to take home and continue your studies.

This place is well displayed and has some great modern mosaics in there as well. Beautiful but that is not all. It gets you entry into the Domus Dei Tappeti Di Pietra for an additional euro, that is awesome go there! Also that extra euro gets you in to the Cripta Rasoni Giardini Pensili which I would skip if I were you
