This is one of the ancient churches in the world! Really beautiful. The inside is plain but the outside and the garden are very nice. I believe it is worth to visit it!

One of the oldest monuments in Ravenna

Not as spectacular as others, still worth a visit. Even though partly reconstructed after WWII, still an impressive building

Beautiful Basilica
Nov 2019
The Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista was built by the Roman princess Galla Placidia in the fifth century AD. The history of church construction is extremely interesting. A marble inscription on the church of San Giovanni Evangelista indicates to us that Galla Placidia (392-450) built this church in memory of the shipwreck survivor, herself and her children. Their Journey took place from Constantinople to Ravenna after the death of her brother Honorio to take over the kingdom of the Western Empire instead of her son Valentinian, who was then too young. Some mosaics are unfortunately lost, but the church is a wonderful example of early Christian architecture. In the Middle Ages, the Benedictines added an important monastery to it. In the 14th century, both the church and the monastery were rebuilt in the Gothic style, because of these interventions, a beautiful portal is visible.

A treasure trove of mosaics!

I was dumbfounded at the number of mosaics housed here! Not usually on the top 10 list for Ravenna, but I would definitely put it in that category!

Historically interesting!

This church has stunning fragments of ancient mosaics. Although old they are well displayed. This church suffered great damage during WW2.
Free entry. Not as beautiful as many other churches but well worth a visit!

A beautiful, serene church, with very old mosaic fragments. Cool inside, very quiet and feels holy.

Well worth a visit. Quite plain. Some lovely newer paintings in old style in one chapel. Highly recommend you go here.

The mosaics are just astonishing
Aug 2019
the basilica di St John is relatively new because it was damaged in the war. The mosaics displayed on the wall however are old and astonishing. Weird creatures and men fighting are displayed in a child-like but comprehensive way. It was truly astonishing

This plain church house the oldest mosaics in the town. Entry to the church is free. Nice to do earlier on your tour of Ravenna.

Undecorated church
Apr 2019 • Solo
Although much of the structure of the church is ancient, it contains none of the decoration of other churches in the city and is therefore not as exciting.

Oldest mosaics in peaceful church
May 2019 • Couples
This is the first church on your way to the town from the train station. So you can visit it first to see the oldest and more naive mosaics. It was built by Empress Galla Placidia when she was saved from a ship accident as she was coming to Ravenna from Constantinople for her son’s enthronement ceremony. Unfortunately the church was bombed during the WW2.
However it is a nice and peaceful church away from the crowds.
