Small but lovely

Gorgeous ceiling in a small room. The problem was the online booking only, which did not work at first as was a real hassle. Annoying. It did not accept my credit card and the staff are not allowed to take cash.

A must see in Ravenna
Oct 2020 • Couples
This Battisterio has lots of 1500 year old mosaics that are special because you can get quite close to them and the saints‘ faces and gestures are not uniform like in other sites, but quite individual. The site certainly belongs to any to-do list in Ravenna.

Great beauty of Ravenna, Battistero Neoniano
Nov 2019
Among the great beauties of Ravenna is certainly Battistero Neoniano (Battistero degli Ortodossi). Wonderful place with significant value both historical and artistic. Battistero Neoniano is one of the oldest monuments in Ravenna. It was built in the early 5th century by the will of Bishop Urso. In the following period, significant restoration works were carried out by Bishop Neone (450 - 475), the complete renovation of the dome and the realization of the interior decoration that today embellished the interior of the Baptistery. It was built in the octagonal shape and made of brick. The interior of the Baptistery is breathtaking with its beauty it is divided into two orders of superimposed arches, offering a very rich decoration divided into three parts: marble in the lower part, stuccos in the intermediate area and mosaics in the upper one with a clear Hellenistic-Roman imprint. At the center of the dome, a large medallion contains the scene of the baptism of Christ, immersed in the waters of the Jordan River which is the oldest testimony of a scene of the baptism of Christ made in mosaic in a monumental building. At the center of the Baptistery, we find the octagonal tub of Greek marble and porphyry. The decorations are fantastic and leave no one indifferent.

take your time!

absolutely marvellous and very rich in things to look at. if you only do a "quick peek", why even bother to go in the first place? this needs a bit of preparation so you understand what is what, and then just time to let it sink in. trying to translate the latin inscriptions is for geeks, i admit- but this is some of the most stunning art you will ever see anywhere (and believe me, i have been around). savor it.

Quick Peek at Great Art
Nov 2019
Of the five UNESCO sites on the Ravenna combo ticket, this one can definitely be seen the quickest. I just looked up at the ceiling for a while, and my goodness this one is vibrant and complex, and was ready to go.

Exceptionally beautiful!
Oct 2019
This was stunning. The ceiling mosaic is the Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. Round them is a circle of Apostles. Easily identified is St Peter with keys and St Paul with a scroll. They are separated by a palm tree and are round a throne with a jewelled cross.
I spent ages in here. Photos do not do justice to the beautiful scene.
Wow!
