Smaller, but only in size.
Jun 2019
It seems dwarfed by the nearby Cathedral and Basilica, but the Baroque-style church has an imposing, aesthetic, captivating façade that immediately inspires you to explore it further. To compete with the two "big ones," San Giovanni has the tallest, 75m bell tower.
Both Correggio and Parmigianino took part in the interior decoration, as famous Emilian painters of the time. Unfortunately, the Correggio paintings that survived the storms of the last centuries are now preserved in museums, and the temple has been left with only the little things designed by Correggio and executed by the disciples. Parmigianino, on the other hand, has some pictures. Two frescoes on the left in the first chapel and also in the second, though it is disputed who painted it. After all, in a work of art, we should not primarily admire the artist, but the work itself. So if the frescoes are impressive - and they are - then take aside our prejudices, we should just enjoy the sight. The San Giovanni Evangelista offers many opportunities for this.

Don't Miss This One
May 2019 • Couples
We called San Giovanni Evangelista the cathedral behind the cathedral. Standing in Piazza del Duomo, you don’t see it because it’s “hidden” behind the main Cattedrale di Parma. But do not miss it, the architecture and artwork in here are outstanding.

Grand and beautiful hall
Apr 2019 • Solo
Although the church looked not so understanding outside, the hall inside was grand and beautiful with lots of paintings and sculptures.

Ask the lights to be turned on
Feb 2019 • Couples
While not as compelling as nearby Parma Cathedral, the church of San Giovanni Evangelista has much to offer. Many come to the building to see the dome fresco by Correggio of Saint John on Patmos--which is reason alone to come here. When you arrive, if the lights are not on, you will see absolutely nothing. Usually there is a friar nearby (in my case, just sitting to the left of the altar area) who would be willing to turn on the dome lights so that the ceiling can be illuminated. It stays on for a few minutes and is well worth it.But that's not all. Wander around the building with a good guide book and you see many things to enjoy.

Beautifully frescoed ceilings and walls, faithfully restored not too long ago, a very short walk from the duome & baptistry.

Stunning Attraction in Parma
Jun 2018 • Friends
If you visit Parma, it is likely to be for its gastronomy, but it is important to add to your list a visit to Monastero di San Giovanni Evangelista. It's a pretty huge building with incredible murals, artworks and rather special baroque facade. You can spend a lot of time inside looking around and learning about its history which dates back to the 10th century. Although busy with tourists, I found it quite peaceful inside with most people being very respectful to others. You are allowed to take pictures, which is a bonus for your memory book.

This striking monastery near Parma cathedral is very large with a large impressive church and specially two courtyards with very picturesque cloisters. I really enjoyed some time in this very peaceful and quiet monastery

Magnificent Baroque facade
Apr 2018 • Couples
The Monastero di San Giovanni Evangelista is one of the true gems of Parma which is located a stone throw away from the Duomo.

Magnificent Baroque facade with seven statues is gorgeous. And the Renaissance interior is equally impressive: the three naves, the chapels, the paintings of the domed ceiling, the tall columns, elaborate statues and carvings - all of them blend into a stunningly glorious ensemble.

A must visit!

And do not miss the cloisters - they are a step away from the church entrance.

Another exceptional church
May 2018 • Couples
Only a block from the extraordinary duomo, S. G. Evangelista might seem to pale in comparison. But we tried to take it on its own and were delighted with the lovely interior friescoes.
