Preserved Gate of Bologna
Sep 2019
Very close to the train station - if you are working your may into the middle fo town you will most certainly encounter this gate. Not perfectly preserved, but well cared for, this gate offers a view of what the medieval traveler would have encountered when visiting Bologna. There is a view of some of the old canals, and the doors are massive. There is enough space to walk around and the guides inside of the structure are very capable of answering questions.

Medieval city gate
Jun 2019 • Couples
Porta Galliera was a gate of the former outer medieval walls of the city. It is located near the Central Railway Station.

This gate is the most ornamented of all the remaining gates. The gate was completed in 1661.

The interior portal has a Baroque facade, while the external portal is more a gate of the defensive military role.

On our visit, there were renovations going on.

Top half is nice!
Jun 2019 • Couples
The top half of this gate is very attractive but currently (June 19) there is scaffolding over the bottom half obscuring it from view.

Old City Gate: Worth a Look
Jul 2018 • Business
Porta Galliera is located in the north of the historic center of Bologna, next to the central railway station and not far from the old Via Galliera (Galliera street). You won't miss it if you walk from the railway station to the center.
Porta Galliera is one of the nine Bologna gates that still exist, and is a part of the third ring of fortress walls of the 13th century.
The historical center of Bologna looks like an irregular octagon. On the perimeter of this figure, the third (and last) walls with massive gates were erected in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Quite close to Porta Galliera you may see the ruins of a castle built for Pope John the 22nd. The people of Bologna had a complex relationship with the Papal States. As soon as the relationship have been deteriorating, the people of Bologna have been destroying the castle as a symbol of papal authority. Relations have been improving - the castle has been rebuilt.

In the city of Bologna the architecture is so beautiful! And this is another one: Porta Galliera. A small “Porta” with a big history.

Nice year old City Gate

This city gate is just across the road from Bologna Centrale Station and is under 2-3 mins' walk. Very well maintained and good for a quick visit and photo stop.

An imposing edifice
Apr 2017 • Couples
Since this structure is so close to the train station, you shouldn't miss seeing it and making it the beginning your Bologna experience. It is also near the main drag of Via Independza. It is a couple of hundred years old after its latest restoration but dates back nearly 800 years as a "guardian" of this entrance into the city.

It is a nice place, with ruins, if you have to wait your train it is almost in front of the station.

A very grand city gate.
Apr 2016 • Couples
Porta Galliera was one of the gates in the third and outer ancient city walls of Bologna, as Bologna grew over the centuries new city walls were erected to accommodate the expanding city. The original gate was built in the thirteenth century, but was rebuilt in the seventeenth century as is seen today. It is located a short walk away from the main train station in Bologna.

One of the remaining city gates
Aug 2015 • Couples
When you come from the railway station and want to go into the city, it is still today the gate to the Via Indenpendenza, to the Old city. It is very nicely renovated
