Bologna's main square. Definitely a must see!

On the main square you can visit Bologna's main cathedral San Petronio, and you can go shopping in the streets close to it: via D'Azeglio and via Indipendenza.

A must see in Bologna. Stay in the piazza for at least half hour to enjoy it and imagine how it looked centuries ago.

The reason to go to Bologna is the statue by Jean de Boulogne (Giambologna) of Neptune. There is a hige tent around it now. Fortunately, interesting reading about the many attempts to restore this statue and the fountain.

Piazzas are gorgeous in almost any weather. The moisture on the stonework can bring out extra details. Although depending on the strength of the camera flash getting pictures can be tricky. Spending time in the square is of course worthwhile -otherwise why write a review-. Seeing the piazza is free too, another plus!

Nice architecture! Very big open space for the people who suffer from small and crowded places! Lack of benches makes it difficult to spend time here

I loved the Piazza, a central meeting place for my friends and I, a tourist office, and a nice place to sit with an ice cream while planning what to do for the day. Unfortunately when the sun comes out, so do the people trying to sell you things. They approach in Italian and, when you tell them you're English,... More

Piazza Maggiore is just in The middle of Bologna, also called "Crescentone". There is free wi fi on all The Piazza Maggiore. Around The square There are many ancient and beautiful buildings and also The Basilica di S.Petronio.

I was tempted to say the piazza was average at first. There's little seating beyond steps. When we visited the fountain of Neptune was undergoing repairs do not visible. The Salaborsa cultural centre with its glass floor was disappointing. In the middle of the piazza is a stepped square which is supposedly unlucky for undergraduate students to walk on. The... More

The Neptune fountain is hidden behind the construction and repair going on and there are many other areas where repairs are also needed. Too many people begging for money and a few of them borderline aggressive like one that try to block our pathway.

If you are in Bologna you cannot fail to visit this most stunning of piazzas. It's right in the centre of the historic old town and features spectacularly beautiful buildings. It's not touristy, just popular. And with good reason.
