Not only the "Mute" by Raffaello, there are many real art worth to see in this gallery. The interior of the former duke's gorgeous life is also adding a romantic atmosphere.

Centrepiece of Urbino

With the Cathedral still closed after earthquake damage, the Gallery is the main attraction in the university town. It has many fine paintings and curation offers many information boards in two languages which is helpful. The building itself is worth seeing and the below ground cellars are extensive and accessible free of charge. There is a cafeteria signposted but we never managed to find it!
Look out for the portrait of La Muta and make sure that you climb the tower for the rooftop views over the town.

Small museum with a few great and famous art works

The art collection on display, in the ducal palace, is of a very varied quality. However, it is worthwhile going to see some of the Pierro della Francesco paintings, the portrait by Rafaël, and the famous painting of the ideal city with perfect perspective. As a bonus, one gets to see the palace from the inside as well, and there are still a few very decorative rooms, of which the one covered with inlaid wood panelling and paintings is the most special. And, the information is largely also available in English.

A must see place (2 to 3 hours) when in Urbino and worth the trip

Pierre de lla Francesca, Raphael, Tiziano, Lotto, Perugino, Juste de gent, Gentileschi, Berugete, just to name a few, are among the many fine painters whose masterworks you find in superbly set environment, namely the private and stately appartements of Duke Montefrelto...A great art visit allowing you to admire how rich Italian culture used to be and how superior to anything other countries produced at the same time. Just bewildering.

World famous art collection
Aug 2018
Go and have a look at the art collection which was saved from looting by the Third Reich by hiding it in the mountains.
It has some world famous paintings by the likes of Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Paolo Uccello, Titian among others.
When cruising along the famous pictures one gets a great overview of the palace.

A wonderful surprise
Oct 2018
We drove from Santa Maria Degli Angeli in Umbria to visit this museum (also known as the Palazzo Ducale) and were totally knocked out by the experience - for a start the Pallazzo is very large and it is very full of a large and varied collection of art - there is a room that is decorated with the most intricate wood carving, another full of wonderful tapestries, yet another hold Persian carpets - and that's not even beginning to scratch the surface. Visit, but make sure that you allow a full day as even then you won't see everything!

My favorite piece of art was the portrait of La Muda by Rafael. In my view, it knocks the Mona Lisa into a cocked hat! And you don't have to put up with the posse of selfie-takers either!!!!
