You can not pre purchase tickets, and they only accept cash (we found out the hard way and had to come back the next day). Not for the faint hearted, claustrophobic or unfit, there’s nearly 600 steps each way. You can get a lift half...More

The way to the cupola is quite long and can be exhausting, but it is fascinating to see into the cupola. When you come outside into the cupola the view is terrific. Highly recommend it.

The vies from the tower (cupola) of St Pieters cathedral are amazing. The climb could be a bit of a strain if your health is not well but definitely worth it if you can make it. 500 or so steps to the top in sometimes...More

8 euro to climb 10 euro to take the elevator part way PAY the extra two euro otherwise, you will be climbing over 500 steps in an increasingly narrow passageway to get to the top. It's worth the 250 steps where you get an awe-inspiring...More

The Vatican is such a special place. I enjoyed every minute there. We paid to take the elevator as high as we could to save our feet for additional sightseeing (there's so much to see in the Vatican and Rome). The rest of the walk...More

We did this first thing in the morning. That had two advantages. First, it was the coolest time of the day. Second, no need for a trip to the gym on the day of the ascent, as it really is a climb. Going up to...More

Some in our group went to the top (cupola) (dome), which cost 10 euros for adults (free for kids) to take the elevator half-way up, and then walk up the remaining 320 steps. (There is no option to take an elevator all the way to...More

This is an additional tour but worth the money and effort. There are views of the Basilica interior from above as well as views of Rome outside. Prepare to walk up some steps!!

What a sight! You can walk up or take the elevator. If you have the chance don’t miss it it worth the entrance fee.

Sorry I'm so late with the answer. It's open 8 - 6 in summer and 8 - 5 in winter. It certainly would be a spectacular view at night if it were open. Peter Wynd
