You just need to see it! Apostles on top of St. Peter's Basilica, the Dome itself and view to Sant'Angelo castle worth spending several euros and climbing up there!

The view was okay but not worth the hot and claustrophobic climb. I would just go to the basilica instead.

The view of the square is really beautiful from the top of the Dome. Worst part of the journey is stairs. If you pay for a lift then you will have around 320stairs left to the top.

You may want to consider reservations during the summer and holiday periods as there is limited access and availability. It is worth the view.

I am so glad that my 2 kids and I walked up to the top of the cupola. Kids are free and it was a break from the massive crowds if the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s. Gorgeous view!

The walk was long and strenuous to the top. But boy was the view worth it!! I highly suggest taking the elevator though. It helped with the height.

Sorry I'm so late with the answer. It's open 8 - 6 in summer and 8 - 5 in winter. It certainly would be a spectacular view at night if it were open. Peter Wynd
