Considered a masterpiece & it is certainly an eye-catching large piece of bronze but I am not sure I would call it beautiful

The entire church is an architectural masterpiece - but this really steals the show. You cannot help but be drawn towards it. It is massive and super intricate.

Everything in the Basilica is a masterpiece. This is no exception and must be seen to be able to understand it. It is kind of difficult to miss inside the Basilica as it is massive.

A truly beautiful piece of artwork that is the centerpiece of St. Peter's Basilica. Like everything in this church its a must see in and of itself.

THIS IS A MUST SEE for everyone not only 4 those who believe. ITs just a spectacular piece of art...the whole church is just jaw dropping. If in Rome... must see.. if not ure just dumb =)

My only guess is that they were either having a special event or they were working on it. There were no such barriers when we were there in May.
