They were preparing for canonization when we visited so it was likely more hectic than usual. That being said, it is still impressive to see.

Very busy . As seen on tv when the Pope does a service. Large area. Large crowds waiting to enter the Basilica. Lots of security and street hawkers selling scarves for shoulders and water bottles. Also countless people trying to sell skip the line tickets....More

The square is an open area with no tickets. Feel free to move around without any charge.
