The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Testaccio
Put the house music on replay and you have Testaccio, an ancient Roman port and former working class neighbourhood where the bass is set to high almost every night of the week. Its collection of discoteche (nightclubs), street parties, and crowded restaurants give it its well-deserved party reputation. During the daytime, Testaccio is more easy listening than club hit, the area is full of locally owned small businesses and has one of the city's larger produce markets.

    A must see
This place was pure magic for us: we wanted to spend some time cooking with local ingredients instead of just going to restaurants: this was our gold mine. The vegetables are just inexplicably fresh and tasty; the fresh pastas are to die for…don’t even get me started on the half prepared dishes like artichokes, yumm!! A must see

Good products in a market atmosphere
What a pleasure to taste good Italian products in this authentic market! Italian wine from stand 18, suppli from stand 66, pecorino and la la coppa sandwiches, fresh pasta,... everyone found something to enjoy. The wine merchant even spoke French to advise us on our tasting. We are far from the touristy and overpriced salumi of tourist areas! Very good quality at honest prices.

    Nice local market
We went there around 10-11am and there was no one there. It was super pleasant. The traders are pleasant and give good advice. We ate pasta in this place, it was super good and affordable. I recommend especially if you want to bring back taste memories.

Exceptionally high quality and specialties from all over Italy
Fruits and vegetables of outstanding quality. Many food stalls with specialties from all over Italy, such as Lampredotto, which would rather be found in Florence. A very pleasant mix of locals and tourists. Thanks to the canopy good to visit even in bad weather. Attention, the market closes completely at 2.30pm, but many of the stalls close before 2pm when the goods are sold out.

My siblings and my spouse and myself just spent some time in Rome. Among the great things we were able to do was to visit the Market in Testaccio. It is a big, colorful, sometimes loud market with lots of things going on. We were visiting the Market with a friend and his family. He is a chef in Rome and knows almost everyone at the Market so our visit was made even more colorful. We were there after 6:00pm and we were able to eat dishes from various venders that were still open. The Market was packed and there was a live concert going on and lots of people attending the show.
Of interest is that the market was recently expanded and some historically significant artifacts were found which are going to be preserved and open to the public for viewing. Near the Market is a "mountain" of clay debris piled up over the ages from clay vessels used to ship many good for consumption in Rome. It is well worth the effort of a visit.

If you want to have a complete idea of the Testaccio neighborhood, you can't help but go to the Nuovo Mercato Testaccio. It is located exactly in front of the old Mattatoio (the slaughterhouse).
It has recently been renovated according to a minimal and contemporary style, in which the geometric rigor, the white and the clean lines create a pleasant contrast with the colors of the goods.
The covered Testaccio local market hosts 100 food stalls including butchers, bakeries and street food products and is a point of reference for food lovers.
Walk among the colorful and tidy fruit, bread, meat and fish stalls and take a look at the food kiosks, all very cute and well laid out.
Seeing, however, is sometimes not enough.
The pleasure of the palate is also important and then perhaps you can stop to taste a sandwich with the famous Roman roasted porchetta. Or, if you prefer, opt for a fresh juice and a slice of pizza.
The beauty of this market, historic for the ancient history of the neighborhood despite its new location, lies precisely in combining the old tradition with daring modernity.
It is also a place that surprises you with its variety and where you always find clothing, footwear, accessories and all kinds of household items.
Conceived according to the scheme of the open-air markets in the squares of Rome - open on all four sides, covered and protected from sun and rain but with transparent and perforated panels through which light and air filter - the architectural project was designed by architect Marco Rietti.
highly recommended.

Passing through the Testaccio district, I had read about the existence of this covered market with the possibility of good food at cheap prices... We stopped and indeed, among the many stalls (unfortunately many of which were closed for holidays) we found that of fresh pasta with typical Roman seasonings. We ordered two portions of "small" pasta (so to speak!): 170 g for the handsome sum of €4.90!!!! Excellent value for money! And the pasta is good too!
The rating is not at its maximum only because we were unable to see the market "at full capacity"

Wonderful central market in Latin American style but with typical local products, fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, clothes, bags and many options for eating fresh pasta, sandwiches and freshly baked piadinas.
Personally, we decided to stop at "Altro", the prices are more than honest compared to the truly generous portions. The staff were very kind and the atmosphere was really pleasant. Compliments!

We love this market. Every stall has beautiful food and there is a central seating area for eating. We got a couple porchetta sandwiches & a bottle of wine after walking around the market. We walked over to a taxi stand near the pyramid to go back towards our hotel nearCampo de Fiori.

After living in Rome for a while, I finally decided to visit the Testaccio market. What can I say? It’s OK, but about 1/3 of the stalls were closed and there weren’t many people around. The produce and meat are good, but not really anything I can’t find in my own Roman quartiere. I guess I’m spoiled by the markets in Spain -especially Santa Catalina in Barcelona- which are much more vibrant and varied. I did like the clothing and home ware stores and I’ll definitely come back to check those out given the paucity of places to buy original house linens in Rome. And I guess for Americans it’s a treat compared to the sterile supermarkets. Romans I feel can get beautiful produce and meat pretty much anywhere.

The district market of Testaccio used to be on Piazza Testaccio, it was untidy, shambolic, a little dark because of the encroaching trees but it had a soul to it that somehow got lost in its move to its current modern white and grey premises. Some stall holders didn't make the move, others did into their cleaner and starker shops and booths. With the gentrification of Piazza Testaccio, the once pulsating heart of a vibrant neighbourhood, became a shadow of its former self. Smart shops opened up and the market reflects this as tour groups of foodies gather round the Sicilian stall or the organic bread stall. Where, I wonder, are the shouting vendors trying to attract the Roman shoppers attention. Where are the Romans? The prices also seem closer to those of Campo Dei Fiore than those of the genuinely Roman market of San Giovanni di Dio. It seems a shame that a once lively market has turned into this pale soulless version of itself.

Tons of vendors here selling produce, meat, prepared food, even clothes and other merchandise. I was here for the food. Mordi e Vai lives up to the hype with the traditional Roman meat sandwiches. Pizza at Casa Manco was delicious and they even give out free samples. A good amount of benches and seating, which I am sure fills up at peak hours (we were here slightly early). Testaccio is a bit off the beaten path for most tourists, so the neighborhood is pleasant and has maybe more of a local feel than some other parts of central Rome.

Having been to many markets in big cities in Europe such as Barcelona etc I have to say this market was overall a disappointment. It is not very large and being so new and under cover it felt a bit soulless - lacking in character and all pretty ordinary with a few exceptions. The pizza from Casa Manco was truly delicious and worth the trip there just for that but the suppli from Food Box were almost inedible - we unfortunately arrived there simultaneously with a tour group and I think they were rushed and cooked ours too quickly - the rice was not al dente (and I have lived in Italy for 15 years and I do KNOW what al dente is), it was almost completely raw - totally crunchy even on the parts right inside so much so we could not even eat it. A total disappointment since this was the place we were recommended to go to for suppli while in Rome.

The new Testaccio Market, across the street from the MACRO, is open daily Monday to Saturday 7am-2pm. The large covered space is clean and airy with over 100 stalls selling fruit, bread, cheese, wine, home wares, clothes and more. There’s a pleasant bar with outdoor seating near the main entrance and another in the center of the complex near the remains of the Roman road uncovered during construction. Arrive with an appetite and browse the stalls until you find what you need for an impromptu picnic. Try Box 15 run by Sergio and Giuliano who prepare traditional beef sandwiches for €3. Sandra Dominici serves local red and white wine at Box 7 by the glass (€.50) or bottle (€2.50).
