The theatre is beautiful, if not the most comfortable (take a cushion to sit on). There's a disappointing lack of creativity and variety though. The same mediocre production of A Midsummer Night's Dream has come back (same actors, same costumes, same director) every year for a decade, at least. The same Romeo & Juliet returns most years, so does the same Much Ado About Nothing. There seems to be a little clique of two or three directors who lazily just go through the motions each season, rather than create new interpretations, or allow others to create. The London Globe also offers a much wider range of experiences, backstage tours, has a shop, a proper cafè etc, whereas this Globe seems less well-funded and organised. Even the posters advertising the season only tend to go up a few days before (or, some years, after) the first show opens, so they're often two or three shows into a season before you even know they've started! Needs new leadership.

Great production of Twelfth Night, but just a joy to see live theatre, with socially distant seating. Drinks and snacks available beforehand. Worth a visit for sure!

Nestled in the Borghese gardens next to the Borghese museum there is an open air theater built on a typical English model. People can sit on the ground or on benches. Representations are mostly from the repertoire of Shakespeare but performed in Italian. The one I saw is the Taming of the Shrew. It was inspired by Shakespeare but situated in the 1940s. The play lasted at long time. 1st part from 9.30 to 11.30 followed more or less the Shakespearian plot. 2nd part from 11.30 to 1 AM based on an imaginative side story from the original play. Caterina is showed as being humiliated by her husband but the singers/dancers/performers are all men (except for Caterina) dressed as women who performed cabaret-style songs.
For those who were expecting faithful representation of the original play, they were disappointed. Still, all the performers are excellent actors/dancers/singers.
If you are sort of proficient in Italian you will enjoy plays at this theater. For all others, sitting for more than 4 hours listening to a foreign language you don’t understand might be too much. Note that since the seating is rough, they rent cushions outside for 1.50 euros. Well worth getting one.

Even if your Italian is weak, the Shakespearean productions in Italian are extraordinary! The production, costumes, music, performances are top notch and surprisingly inexpensive. The theatre space itself is a faithful reproduction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre which adds to its charm. A once in a lifetime experience, even kids love it 😀❤️😍 PS. In October 2016 the Globe will host a British production in English!!!

Productions are really excellent in this Italian copy of the English Globe.
They are all in Italian, with great translations from Shakespeare and really inspiring direction.
The only fault is in the booking: ridiculous extra charges are applied when you buy tickets on line in advance, even for printing tickets at home.

The theatre itself is wonderful, a brick-by-brick replica of the Globe in London. Unfortunately the Romans have nowhere near the desire (or funds, perhaps) to make this as exciting an addition to the city's cultural life as they could. The Artistic Director is a fine comic actor, Gigi Proietti, who is popular in Italy (and very popular in Rome, his home city) but my feeling is that he's simply a figurehead, rather than actively involved in creating the season's theatre. Shakespeare wrote or co-wrote 37 plays but you wouldn't know that if you were a season ticket holder here, as they simply bring back the same five or six EVERY year, and none of them are particularly exciting productions in the first place.

I couldn't believe my luck when I learned there was a replica of Shakespeare's Globe in Rome. I took a taxi to the Borghese Gdns, the largest in Rome. I was disappointed however to find that there was no performance that night, my fault entirely, as I should have done my homework first to find out times and performances. I then attended the Thursday evening performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at 9 pm. It was great to be in the audience. As an English Australian I was fortunate to follow the Italian dialogue as I know the script, plot and storyline. This is an event I will treasure. It has afforded me a greater understanding of what it would have been like back in Shakespeare's time. Wonderful!
