Top ways to experience Testaccio
The area
Neighbourhood: Testaccio
Put the house music on replay and you have Testaccio, an ancient Roman port and former working class neighbourhood where the bass is set to high almost every night of the week. Its collection of discoteche (nightclubs), street parties, and crowded restaurants give it its well-deserved party reputation. During the daytime, Testaccio is more easy listening than club hit, the area is full of locally owned small businesses and has one of the city's larger produce markets.

Testaccio market is a fun foodie treat
Jan 2020 • Family
We went to the Mercado Testaccio for lunch and it was a great experience. This is the market where the locals shop for vegetables, meat, fish and some clothing. There were many stalls with prepared foods as well. Highlights included Casa Marco for pizza with unique toppings, Mardi and Vai for warm brisket sandwiches, and stall 66 for the fried Roman Jewish artichokes. We visited this market on our 4th day in Rome so we had already seen the highlights of the city. The Testaccio market was a fun adventure!

Mercato Testaccio

Must eat: Altro Pasta e Vino - great lunch time deals. Cheapest in town but excellent al dente pasta freshly made to order.
Must buy: Alimentari delicatessen - excellent salumeri. Great prices. Excellent service especially for a tourist. Just pick up a some cheese and fresh buns in the market and have a picnic.

Not great

The area has its charms, however I wouldn’t recommend tourists to go here as there is not much to see or visit. We were looking for a place with good authentic pasta and heard this was an area locals go to. We couldn’t find restaurants at first and asked a local where to go. He advised us to go to the area Trastevere instead.

An interesting neighbourhood.

This is a rather interesting neighbourhood in Rome, but as it's sort of far away from the city center, it is not popular with tourists, despite the beautiful attractions of the Pyramid of Cestius and the beautiful non-Catholic cemetery nearby.

A little out of the way but well worth it

Testaccio is a neighbourhood worthy of discovering, maybe not on your first visit to Rome as there are so many popular and familiar attractions to see, it's the original food neighbourhood of Rome. By our third visit to Rome we planned a visit through a food walking tour, it was a memorable experience and highly recommend. Now five years later when we returned this May it all felt familiar, not crowded or full of tourists, we were able to rediscover the iconic pyramid near the Protestant cemetery, visit Piazza Testaccio and have lunch in Mercato Testaccio. The closest metro station is Piramide, from here it is also possible to hike up Aventine Hill to Piazza Dei Cavalieri Di Malta.

A worthwhile side trip.

This was not on our list of places to go in the beginning but we were glad we added it toward the end of our stay in Rome. This is a unique neighborhood and was a welcome break from the crowds in the tourist areas downtown. We took the metro to the Pyramid Metro stop and walked to the Mercato di Testaccio and then took the bus back to the metro stop. Things to see along the way include Porta San Paolo the 3rd century Aurelian Wall, the Protestant Cemetery, an interesting array of bars, and Monte Testaccio (a 115 foot tall ancient trash pile made of broken pots!). We made this trip during the day so things were pretty quite. Next time we want to do it in the evening when the place is supposed to be jumping. We definitely recommend a side trip here to get more complete feeling of Rome.

Testaccio is a real discovery. Next to Trastevere, and within walking distance of the Pirimide metro station and the Colosseum. To be discovered.

Italian deliciousness around every corner!

I strongly suggest you arrange Francesco to guide you for the Testaccio Food Tour. He is so knowledgeable about the history of that locale and about how Roman food should be served. We devoured the information and the food!

Boring neighbourhood during the day
May 2018
Testaccio was disappointing during the day. No atmosphere. Market was not a visit worth unless you have to do your groceries! Pyramid was nice to see.
