Worth a trip "outside the walls" to walk the Appian Way and see the sights
Aug 2019
It is a little bit on the other side of town from all the mainstream Rome tourist attractions ("outside the walls"), but definitely worth seeing. They have an English guided tour which for 8 euros I would recommend as the guide is very helpful in explaining the history of the catacombs. I was able to get there from the Spanish Steps by subway and bus, so it was a very easy and economical trip. While on this side of town, I would recommend a stop at the Church of Domine Quo Vadis, which is a short bus ride down the Appian Way from the Catacombs. If you do take the bus, keep in mind while it lets you off right in front of the Catacombs, when returning, you need to walk down the Appian Way to get to the return stop. There are no sidewalks on this part of the road, and since this is Rome the cars are flying by so just be careful. After the Quo Vadis Church you can take the bus back to the subway and head over to Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. You can make a great half day trip or longer out of this and see many beautiful sites of religious importance.

Fascinating glimpse into the past
May 2019
The catacombs were absolutely fascinating and were such an amazing feat of design. They date back to the third century and were named after the martyr St. Sebastian. You can only visit the catacombs by taking one of the tours which last around 45 minutes. The guide was really knowledgeable and took us through the three underground levels of galleries that were lined with wall tombs and smaller spaces for urns. The tour finishes in the beautiful basilica which is located directly above the catacombs. I wouldn't recommend the tour for anyone with mobility problems as there are loads of stairs and the floors are very uneven.

Fascination detour
Jan 2020
We dropped in here during our day-long amble along the Appian Way and we were delighted that there was space on the next English tour. Our guide was informative and took us round various levels, including the deep catacombs, the tomb of St Sebastian and a Roman necropolis, before ending up in the church of St Sebastian itself.

The history was fascinating, although I found it a bit rushed and I would have preferred to have longer to look round. It was disappointing that the vast majority of the grave sites in the catacombs were empty. I understand the rationale for this, but it detracted from the overall effect.

Worth the trip

Full disclosure, I am biased. My son, who died of leukemia a year ago today was named after St. Sebastian. My wife and daughter and I visited today. That said, just from a historical perspective it was a great site. The Basilica got a bit emotional for us though.

We decided to see San Sabastian Catacombs because we’d seen reviews that it was interesting.....and it was. We made it just in time for the English tour.

Just ok to visit
Oct 2019
First of all, don't buy your ticket on the Tour bus or in Rome before you go, they charge more, its only €8 at the entrace of the catacombs. Anyone interested in going here should know there are no bones or remains to be seen, its the crypts only.
The tour last 30-40 minutes and ends up in the main Church. There are over 60 catacombs in Rome, but only 5 are open to the public. San Sebastien here consists of 12km of tunnels but you will only see less than 1km of that.

The catacombs are outside the city walls of Rome so you will either need to take public transport there (not reliable) or you can do it as part of the Big Bus Tour (Purple Route). Takes about 30 minutes to arrive there on the bus.

The tour guide is very knowledgable and is very interesting to listen to, but you get consumed by the walk down the dark passages.
Photos are not permitted underground.

Worth a visit if you are looking for someting different to do, but there are better places to see in Rome. At the end of your trip there is a nice souvenir and a coffee shop available. Ask for an espresso corretto, an Italian beverage, a shot of espresso with a small amount of liqueur, usually grappa which will warm you up.

Very interesting

The guided tour is available in different languages and is very interesting! Fascinating visit in one of the biggest catacombs in Rome. You will learn a lot and see traditions that are roughly 2000 years old.
One tip tho: Beware of the tickets sold by Big Bus: they ARE more expensive and there is no line to skip!
Also if you’re claustrophobic I might not recommend.
Photos are not allowed out of respect.

Informative tour
We took this tour which was approximately 45 minutes so you don’t get bored or distracted. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately you don’t see any remains, they have been removed.

Interesting, yet not much to see.

If you have time, come. It is very interesting to learn about the history of the place.
There is a guide for every group (only in English and Italian).
You will go down to a small section of the catacombes (out of 12 km!!!).
You can’t take photos nor video.
The pictures you can see here are from the basilica, located above the catacombes.
If you don’t have time, and you have to choose between this and another important site, think twice.
Oh, it’s free on Sundays.
