This is a modest wall mounted collection of artefacts (approx. 10) from the late 18th - early 20th century that claim to evidence the afterlife in general and purgatory in particular. They could be explained by natural or human phenomena, or they could be evidence of the existence of purgatory. You decide! English language guidance sheets available. These are very... More

Saw this in the DK Rome Top 10 guidebook, in the "off the beaten track section". Thought we'd give it a try. Wish we hadn't bothered. It's just a wall with a small number of artefacts of questionable origin - x-files it isn't. Disappointing.

It is not the usual place crowded with tourists. It consists of a small room. The museum is a good destination for people who want to visit the less known part of Rome.

We stopped by on the way from Vatican back to the Old City and it was a quick visit. The museum is just one room with some relics showing contacts of the souls from purgatory with our world. The priest was lovely but he does not speak English well enough to understand what he was explaining. The museum is free.... More

Small collection of relics that a priest has collected to revitalize devotion and prayers for the souls in purgatory. We were told about this museum by our priest in Texas, so we wanted to visit this.

The Museo delle Anime del Purgatorio was more of a church than an actual museum. We came a cross this church while waking around Rome shortly after our arrival and it was beautiful inside. After walking around, we finally found the museum part with the help of a gentleman inside the church; the "museum" part was difficult to find. The... More

This small museum is worth a stop by as you travel from Castle San Angelo to Trevi fountain area. It has an interesting display of purgatory items. No need to allow more than 20 minutes.

You have to go into the church and inside the "sanctitudo" to see the small room with all the pictures and the explanation sheet in every language. They even turned the light on so I could take better pictures ! Small museum, but interesting to see :)

I think "museum" is too big word for this exhibition. There are actually about 15 specimens hanging on a wall. For me looking at the burnt marks on paper and cloth wasn't exciting, moving or thought provoking. Maybe the museum was a true attraction in the 19th century, but not now.
