Top ways to experience Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

The Tour is quite macabre but worth doing
We decided to do the secret tour at 3pm for 15 people and I would totally recommend it. Walk around the castle for about an hour beforehand, then go on the tour! If you are tall be prepared that the hard hats are head savers and you will feel like a giant. It’s quite a macabre tour when you see what went on -I won’t spoil it and the only disappointment was that you couldn’t walk through the tunnel linking the castle to the the Vatican City. I also don’t think many people realised how much power the Pope really had until unification. I would recommend going for an Aperitivo after the tour, as the views are really nice.

    A layered cake of history
To my shame and and after three trips to Rome, I have not visited Castel Sant’Angelo yet, so naturally it was my first priority. What a treasure! Castel Sant’Angelo is like a layered cake of history starting with the days of emperor Hadrian at the ground level and then all the way up to the 19th century. The 360 degrees views of Rome from the wall are stunning, especially, from the top where the statue of the Angel is. I am a huge opera lover, so it was very special for me to see the spot where Floria Tosca ended her life throwing herself all the way down from the upper level of the Castle after Cavaradossi’s execution. And the views of Ponte Sant’Angelo... stunning... Allocate at least two hours for your visit.

    Cocktails at the castle
Wasn't sure whether I should go or not, but was really pleased I did. It has good facilities and a major plus was the free audio guide app you can download once you're in. Add to that the lovely views you get and the café where you can get cocktails (negroni 9 euros, Campari and soda 6 euros plus complimentary snacks), other drinks and a bite to eat I was really pleased that I went and really enjoyed the three hours or so I was here.

Beautiful iconic castle located on the Tiber River and near Sant'Angelo Bridge. The architecture and history here is just wonderful. The artwork and building were very impressive. The view from the top was worth the crowds.

Castles can be boring but this one was great! It is more like a small city within the walls with lots to explore. The exhibits are good but the views are spectacular! There is even a little cafe/bar at the top. Definitely worth a visit as it is not as busy as other tourist spots but don’t forget your hat or umbrella.

The castel was on top of our teens bucket list when we came to Rome and we went early in the morning. We were there 15 minutes before the opeing and came first in line, so there in no need for a "skip the line" ticket.

The bridge with angel sculptures is quite impressive, and when you cross it the castle is straight ahead. The castle has a rotating schedule of art exhibits, which you must pay for online before showing up. The exhibit was on Twiggy and the Mod era when we were there. Didn't have tickets, but I lived through the era & still own magazines featuring Twiggy in my attic. After crossing the bridge turn to the left & St. Peter's basilica is right before you, only a block away. The traffic is thick at this intersection, but I was able to zoom in and get the basilica to fill the frame for a few nice shots. Afterwards we easily caught the double-decker bus again to the next stop.

We were staying nearby in Prati and that's why this was a good choice to visit early in the day. It was empty and we purchased ticket on the site - very convenient. The castle has quite a history - being used for various purposes across the centuries. And it has amazing views from the top. If you have time in Rome, this is a good place to spend that.

Although it is my third visit to Rome, it was my first visit to the Castle and I wasn't disappointed. We booked skip the line tickets for when the castle opened to avoid the annoying tour groups.
We arrived an hour and 15 minutes before the castle opened as the area is devoid of people and is very calm and relaxing.
The castle itself is a magnificent building with inside and outside., There are some wonderfully decorated rooms which I wasn't expecting, plus panoramic views of the city from the rooftop. Well worth the visit.

We visited in July, it’s hot and crowded, which you should expect, but is very informative and you don’t need a guide. Go at your own pace, we didn’t need to pre-buy tickets and got a view of the city from the top at the end.
