Our guide and driver were wonderful. Max is Franciscan and is passionate about the Vatican, its history and art treasures. He walks you through, literally and with storytelling in a way you will always remember. He delights in connecting an inquisitive mind to the various forces and personalities that came together to create this world. But he also is a realist. Best guide ever!

My family did two private tours with Ariana: one general half day tour of the major sights of Rome and one half day tour of the Vatican. Both were great in terms of content, it’s hard to go wrong with the major sights. That said, Ariana was a fantastic guide. Really smart woman, allowed us to skip lines, well prepared, and very funny. She definitely helped us notice things we otherwise wouldn’t have learned about, even using the generic tour books / audio guides.

We contracted with Access Italy for 2 (1/2 day) private tours in Rome. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. We visited Vatican City and the Collesuim, and we were able to skip the "main" line to get in, however there was still plenty of line-standing at almost every point on the tour. Also, it should be noted, that you do NOT have access to anything that everyone else is visiting. The big shocker came when the tour was over. That's when our lovely guide escorted us to the taxi stand and told us that this is where the tour ended. They may pick you up at your hotel, but that's it. When the tour ends, you are DONE. (Not sure if Oprah and Obama got the same treatment, but I suspect not.). A big surprise, given the BIG PRICE.

On the recommendation of an Italian friend, we booked a 2 day tour with Access Italy. Everything was confirmed via email by a responsive agent in Rome. They were able to adapt and change my reservation right up to the night before. You always have a twinge of doubt when paying in full in advance. However, my fears were erased when we were greeted by a smiling woman, Giorgia, in the hotel lobby. Anticipating that my mother and younger children might not be able to walk as much, they sent a car as well. The first day we toured the historic sites: Colosseum and Forum. The extremely long lines were due to the Vatican being closed after Easter, so tourists flocked to the other areas. However, Giorgia had already printed out our front of the line tickets and we entered in a fraction of the time it would have normally taken. She was patient with my mother who needed a slower pace, and was able to entertain the younger children with spotting lions and animals, while giving the older children the relevant history lesson that I intended for this trip. She also was attentive to our needs: toilets, snacks, water breaks. On the second day, our Vatican tour was extremely crowded. Despite being sardines for hours, we had the treat of being taken to the sacristy of the Sistine Chapel where the papal robes and ancient artifacts are kept. No photos allowed, but I cannot even begin to describe what a cool experience that was.... absolutely unforgettable and emblazoned in my memory. Worth paying for the "behind the scenes". I must mention that the head office was able to suggest great dinner places and make reservations too!! Thank you Giorgia and Access Italy!!!
