About
Under the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, the neuralgic centres of the district, we find the second most important early Christian cemetery in the city. The Catacombs were extended following the burial of the North African bishop, deposited here between 451 and 453 AD. The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are the second largest in Naples, and includes both early Christian and 17th century elements. On one side there is the intensity of the early Christian elements, such as the tomb of St. Gaudiosusand frescoes and mosaics of the 5th and 6th centuries, and on the other, the special graves reserved for nobles, dating back to the 17th century, when the catacombs resumed the function of a burial site. The Catacombs of San Gaudioso conserve valuable frescoes and mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries that feature many symbols that were widely used in the early Christian era, such as the fish, the lamb, and grapes with branches.

This was an excellent and fascinating experience, getting a rare glimpse into a slightly macabre history of Naples. The guides were very knowledgable and clearly very passionate about the history of the catacombes, and it is worth noting that the tours of San Gaudioso and San Gennaro catacombes are a community initiative, starting as a small group of locals and slowly expanding into a bigger operation. Profits from the tours go into regeneration projects in the local area which has historically been a deprived and troubled neighbourhood but through schemes such as this, is on its way to recoery. My final comment is that this tour presents excellent value for money, with the 8 euro ticket being valid for both San Gaudioso and San Gennaro catacombes; the website sayst you have to arrange visit to the other catacombe by emailing their booking team, however we managed to book onto a tour at the other catacombe by turning up and presenting our ticket on the day.

Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and incredibly kind. He was very passionate about the catacombs and the history behind what we was explaining to us. The tour itself and the catacombs were absolutely amazing, and the tour is relatively inexpensive. Definitely worth checking out.

It was absolutely pouring outside so we decided to do these catacombs and we both really enjoyed it, it was very interesting. Not expensive, less than 10 euros and was a guided tour in English.

We had an excellent guided tour through the small but historically very interesting catacomb with a very enthusiastic tour guide. Best check the tour times to avoid waiting but we were actually lucky to have a tour start right when we arrived. Tour was in English and since we were only 4 people had a very personal touch. Make sure to support this project to help the local community.

Is possible ho there by Metro and then by foot 20 minut. If you go over bridge, you use lift and church with catacomb is next to bridge. Front of church pizza is excelent, big and cheap. History of catacomb is amazing and rugged, but very interesting. You survive something about sacred.

I was really impressed with these catacombs! Loved the history behind them. I loved how they had painted some of the people on the walls, great eerie and creepy feeling! Better than the ones in Rome!

I visited these catacombs just after the other nearby ones, San Gennaro. If you plan to do both, note they are both covered under one ticket, but I suggest doing San Gaudioso first. The tour is slightly shorter and you can then walk over to San Gennaro just in time for the next hour's tour.

And I do recommend seeing both, as they are completely different. Of note at San Gaudioso are the fascinating and unusual burial customs. As with San Gennaro, no bones are here.

The tour of these catacombs is special in itself, with the history and knowledgeable guides. Added into that, is a community project that is using its local resources to help pull their community out of poverty. The guides are locals, who along with the local priest have are using the entrance money to create training and opportunities for the young generation of their community.

Not only do you get to see some fantastic history, you get to support a local community trying to improve their life in an innovative way.
