I am in Ischia for the month and wanted to explore the island other than going To the beach everyday. at Ischia Porto I found a poster flyer for Ischia Trekking offering 3 treks - all incredibly priced at just 15 euros. I really wanted to get to the top of Mt Epomeo and had checked with Ischia Review but was advised that trips during the summer are rare as it's believed to be too hot. I emailed Ischia Trekking and quickly was scheduled for a pick up next morning at 930 here at my apartment. I was not expecting to be pick up but was really happy to be as I'm not sure I would have found my way. Antonio, my guide, and another hound trekker began our assault mid way. We travelled through and up several forests, visited stone houses made from caves, foraged for porcini mushrooms, sampled the black berries growing wildly and profusely throughout the mountain top. It is an arduous walk up, good tennis shoes are required, and it would be better to have those sport pants that zip off above the knees. While it was warm, most of the climb up is covered by the tree tops of the two forests as we circumnavigated the mountain top. At the very top there is a lovely restaurant which specializes in Rabbit a la cacciatore ...clearly I skipped that...but their bruschetta from their garden was just incredible with sweet tomatoes, fresh basil, sweet red onions, and garlic...awesome.. The only way to this restaurant is to climb, though I am sure there must be another simpler trail until near the top. The point of our trek was to explore and we did. Antonio is charismatic, does not speak much English, but will absolutely go out out of his way to share his knowledge of the plants, trees, wildlife, and history of Mt Epomeo. As the Island no longer supports caring for the trails, Antonio and other guides carry clippers and continue to prune the heavy and sometimes spiky vegetation along the path. He was most caring for me that I had no desire to sprint up the mountain but to ensure my safety, we walked at my pace (steady careful but on point). I am so very happy that I decided to pursue this and that Ischia Trekking and highly recommend this group. I think their prices are ridiculously inexpensive for the time involved on the trek. I recommend a good walking stick, or at least find 2 sturdy sticks while traveling through the forests as on the way down the trail is fast, steep and slippery. It's basically a dirt road with deep trails from rain water. The dirt when dry tends to be slippery. They offer 2 more trails..and I am considering both as a great way to explore this island.
