A restored XVI century building with court located in via San Giovanni Vecchio 60 (Sasso Barisano) is the home of the 500 m2 large Museo Laboratorio della Civiltà Contadina (Museum-Workshop of the Peasant Culture). The exhibition rooms are dedicated to the ancient trades related to the work in the fields but also to all the other handicraft activities carried on in the ancient quarters of Matera: sieve-maker, tanner, shepherd, basket-maker, cavamonti, shoe-shiner, barber, cabinet-maker, mastro d'ascia, blacksmith, tailor, conciapiatti, potter, knife-grinder, saddler, coppersmith, cobbler, peasant, scalpellino. Also, various every-day tools are exposed: farm tools, equipment for storage and processing of wheat, weaving equipment. Other rooms are dedicated to daily-life places - such as the public wine cellar and the typical house - and themes related to the South-Italy history such as brigandage, childhood condition and water-harvesting. The Museo-Laboratorio aims to be a dynamic structure among the tourism products of Matera and a reference for the development of the culture of the past through exhibition and educational activities.

I went with my family in April and we happened upon this museum. The guide gave us an amazing tour of the facility providing us exhaustive and detailed information about what was Life in Matera decades ago. I totally recommended it as something to see and eniiy.

This museum holds an amazing collection of art effects and antiques from the people from the Sassi, and displays how the lives were lived in the caves during the past centuries. It is an astonishing walk through a cave, carved into the rock and filled with stories from the different trades which was previously found in these caves. Definitely worth... More

The rich material culture of the residents of Matera has been collected in this museum. Whether you are interested in pottery repair, digging a new house in the tufo, playing music, cooking, weaving, growing food, leather work or any of the other occupations in traditional Matera, this museum has the tools used by those artisans and farmers. A veritable cave... More

This is a small idiosyncratic museum, established by an enthusiastic collector, Donato Cascione. We found it after reading the book of memoirs "Tales from the Musuem" (which is also highly recommended). We were fortunate to be the only ones in the museo at the time and were kindly shown around by Signore Casione. It is well worth a visit.

This is an outstanding collection of artefacts from peasant culture and the "makers" of the past. This venue takes time to fully appreciate, and I thoroughly recommend the curators book - which is a collection of "peasant" memories, experiences and examples of everyday living. This museum is an ethnographic gem, and should feature on any itinerary - something here for... More

Wonderful window into the past! amazing really, you get a true sense of life as it was lived, in a simple gracious display of elements in situ.
