Top ways to experience Sobrino de Botin
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

SO glad we went
Jul 2021
We decided on a lunch reservation since I'd found a discount though one of their booking sites for specific seating times, but I can honestly say I think it would have been just as worth it at full price. We ordered the suckling pig, which was entirely as good as others have said, and the roast chicken that was well seasoned, juicy and just the right amount of food with the included potatoes. We also had the bread and butter and I'll admin the price for a small wrapped packet of butter seemed abnormally high but they're transparent about the price in the menu and we just laughed about it as we carefully rationed our pat of butter with the bread.

Our waiter was one of the best we encountered during all our meals in Madrid. Very kind, helpful with tips on cutting the meat from the bone on the suckling pig, spoke with us in both Spanish and English, brought us a paper copy of the menu to keep as a souvenir and encouraged us to check out the original wine cellar that even pre-dates the restaurant before we left. He was top notch.

The entire dining experience at Sobrino de Botin - from the historic setting, the cozy nook in the lower level with only a few tables that made it feel more intimate, the food, and the wonderful service - made for a very memorable afternoon.

The experience, not the food
Jun 2021
We chose this place to have lunch here for the experience of being at the oldest operating restaurant rather than for the food. We did not have any reservations, but were able to get a table on the ground floor just near the main entrance. The restaurant had a very nice old world decor with paintings, miniature models of the restaurant, original tiles, dark wood paneling and wooden ceiling beams.

We ordered lamb, roast chicken, and steak that were served with only potatoes, as well as garlic prawns. They also brought out some bread which was an extra charge. We also ordered white chocolate cheesecake and Basque cheesecake, both really good. Service was good and fast, but the food was really overpriced, especially the prawns.

Everything about this experience was amazing. The staff are friendly and welcoming, almost like being in someone's home.

Food is top notch and beyond my expectations. My only regret is i'm not a bigger eater. The restaurant itself is beautiful and feels like a different century.

Can't recommend enough

Special experience
Dec 2020
Really special experience. It is the world’s oldest functioning restaurant according to Guinness World Records. It is functioning since 1725, what is crazy. Tip: you need to make a reservation online, however, it is quite easy through their webpage.

The place is actually really beautiful and well preserved. We order the croquette and also the famous sucking pig. We also order the “Pollo en pepitoria” that according to our research is a typical Spanish dish. Both were really well made, really simple dishes but well executed. It was not something out of the norm, mostly simple.

Highly recommend having this experience. you feel like you are part of history eating in such an iconic place. However, if you are looking for an extraordinary fine dinning or mind blowing dishes, perhaps this is not the place for you. The food as I said before is tasty but quite simple. This is more like an event than just a dinning experience due to the history of the place.

We booked to eat at 20:00, it is not a normal Spanish time to eat, so there were mostly tourist. However, it was great that it was a really peaceful dinner because the place was almost empty when we arrived.

COVID reference: the place is super clean, with alcohol in gel everywhere, the tables far apart, so that is really nice.

excellent meals

Undoubtedly one of the best experiences I had in my life was being able to visit "Sobrino de Botin" a couple of years ago, however I still can't forget the excellent service, the cleanliness of the place is very good since it is impossible not to find a tablecloth spotless or squeaky clean cutlery. I ordered the Iberian ham as a starter, which was very pleasant, I also ordered the famous "suckling pig" as a main course, I recommend it, excellent flavor and very good portion, as I went in summer, I recommend accompanying it with a fruit sangria. It is very important to make a reservation, since the place is famous for being the oldest restaurant in the world, many people in the world travel continuously to enjoy a very elegant and delicious food. To end an unforgettable evening, I recommend the Catalan cream for dessert or a portion of chocolate cake.Without a doubt I recommend you go to this restaurant that is located in Madrid, a few steps away from Plaza Mayor.

Great experience!
Is it pricy? Relatively, but in Madrid it is on the standard! The place is like a museum and obviously you don’t have to pay only for the food on your dish, which by the way is excellent, but also for eating in a historical and worldwide famous location. Service was also fantastic. I don’t understand people who say they serve you few food or it is pricy, just find all you can eat or fast food if you don’t appreciate this kind of places

Sometimes stupid Facebook videos yield occasional gems of recommendations.
Dec 2019
So my husband was scrolling endlessly through Facebook videos when he happened upon this traveler's vlog about Sobrino de Botín, the world's oldest continually operating restaurant, as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. We had no plans for Madrid whatsoever. It wasn't even my choice of city to visit (we were going to see family). But lo and behold, this video caught his attention, and so we had to put it on the itinerary.

First, I had tried to make a reservation online, but couldn't. Fortunately, we passed by as they were opening for prep. I sauntered in and asked for a table reservation for the following evening. The restaurant host booked us for 22:00 (Spanish scheduling is the weirdest thing). I asked for an earlier reservation, so he put us in for 20:00. That's first seating of the evening, and it is clearly for the tourists because the locals never dine that early.

Fast forward to dinner the next night. We arrive on time for our reservation and are seated with minimal wait. We were in one of the larger dining rooms. Some of us ordered the suckling pig. The skin was crispy and delicious. We also ordered the cod with roasted peppers, croquettes, mushrooms, and various small plates. We finished with flan.

Overall, it was a memorable experience in a delightful setting. Just know that if you choose the 8:00PM seating, you will be with all the other tourists. I just can't hang with Spanish time.

A little piece of history while you dine.
Sep 2019
We stumbled upon the restaurant and once we realized it was the "Oldest" restaurant we had to give it a try. We managed to get a table right away even though they were very busy. They have you packed in pretty tight but it was worth it. Good food, fun atmosphere and our server was great. We would definitely give this another visit on a return to Madrid.
