If you want to go north of Madrid, you need to use this train station because it is the one that has trains to go north. The building is quite old and needs to be remodelled to help passengers.

People everywhere. Stores spread out. Some cafes outside to grab quick food before boarding. Trains are clean and fast. Bathrooms are terrible and only one I could find at far end of the station. Good system of announcing trains in English and Spanish. Well organized....More

There is inexpensive luggage storage right at Atocha. Line 1 of the metro will take you straight to Chamartín.
