In the nearly one thousand works on display, visitors can contemplate the major periods and pictorial schools of western art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to Pop Art. The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions. Visit free of charge
Mar 2021
I was very lucky that the museum was free of charge due to some renovations while I was in Madrid. I could just come without reserving a ticket. The displayed art is not my favourite but it is interesting to see. The museum is very big and sometimes I did not know where to go and how to find the exit. However there were many people working there who were able to show me the way. My recommendation is to check before online if there are any artworks here which you would like to see and then decide if you want to go or not.

Lots of high-quality art

The impressive collection of Baron Thyssen nicely complements the Prado, especially with its Impressionist art.

Wonderful
Oct 2020
Iaking a welcome return visit here was the cultural highlight of a long planned and Covid notwithstanding return trip to Madrid. Safe, secure, well curated, wonderfully lit, easy to negotiate. Lots of places to sit and quietly enjoy some of the wonderful paintings on display. Clearly an eclectic collection but all th better for that and there really is something for everyone to enjoy. Nice cafe and shop (the latter a bit expensive) to round off the visit. I will definitely return at some stage as there is always something different that catches the eye, not just the "big names".

Overview of Western Art: Dutch and French
Sep 2020 • Solo
This is an amazing museum in Madrid. It is strong in areas where the Prado is weak, such as Italian, Dutch, British and Russian art. It also contains a collection of Impressionist, expressionist, and modern art. Cezanne, Picasso, Van Gogh, all the main painters from the 20th century are represented in the museum.

A Highlight of Madrid
Oct 2019
Having been to several galleries whilst in Spain, this was a highlight and overshadows the Prado in my opinion

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the museum. The special exhibition on Rembrandt was very good. The staff were very helpful and precautions taken due to COVID were thorough, yet reasonable.

You can find masterpieces from impressionist, abstract, and modern artists. Such a high concentration of big names. Enjoy! And make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes. The collection is huge!!!

Beautiful experience!
Jul 2020
Recently moved to Madrid, we started exploring the rich art life of the city.
This museum was on our list and we spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon visiting both the permanent exhibition and the temporary one (Rembrandt).
While the collection is impressive and absolutely rewarding, the one thing I missed was a bit more story telling on the historical periods and the shifts between them helping educate the visitors' eye (One example I liked was a note mentioning that in the 15th to mid 15th century, having your portrait done was expensive hence a serious thing. People were not expected to smile - everyone was showing very self-composed, leaving the painter "to give life" to the faces through their own talent. That obviously changed with the time:))

The Best of the Big Three
Nov 2019
Absolutely love this museum. I think it gets overshadowed by Prado and Reina Sofia but in my opinion (and everyone in my family) it is the obvious best. It has amazing art work featuring tons of incredibly well-known and talented artists. It is extremely well organized and not overwhelming like many art museums can be. Plus its free with the joven transport card which I think is so cool! Definitely don't miss!
