Top ways to experience Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Paseo del Prado
The area around the elegant Paseo del Prado boulevard is much-visited by both locals and tourists. The world-famous Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums form a triangle of art and culture that spans this grand and beautiful avenue. On weekdays, the Prado Museum opens its doors for free after-work hours, drawing a diverse and excited queue of art lovers that wraps around the block. Palacio de Cibeles and Círculo de Bellas Artes cultural centers are other artsy hangouts to check out, with rooftop bars that provide impressive views of the city. While the Paseo del Prado and its roundabouts form a busy throughway in Madrid, a broad green pedestrian park in the middle is a calm and gorgeous place for a relaxing stroll. Just east of the museums, the Retiro Park is always a confluence of activity as families and friends of all ages take to the pretty paths and lawns to stretch their legs or to have a picnic.

Surrealist art and of course the famous Guernica
Sep 2021
A really nice museum with several temporary exhibits as well as the permanent exhibit. The collection of Dali, Joan Miró and Picasso is very impressive. And of course Guernica is unique in its place amongst the art world. It’s also really neat to see the photos of the development of it as it was being painted taken by Dora Manar, which are located in the same room

Underwhelming
Sep 2021 • Solo
If you are looking for Spain’s answer to the Centre Pompidou in Paris or the Tate in London, this is not it. The staff is unfriendly, don’t speak English and therefore cannot help you if you’re not a native speaker. The collection is disorganized and barring a few major works by Dali and Picasso just not worth the time and money. Skip this and do something else.

Not the best

Crowded and chaotic with the most unfriendly staff I've ever seen at a museum. Disorganized and difficult to navigate.

Picasso, Miro, Dali and more

quite a large art gallery
The gallery not only hosts Picassos Guernica but many more paintings of different masters of the 20th century.
A visit will easily take more than 1 ½ hours.
Ticket prices were fair and the place was not to crowded.

Dali, Picasso
Jul 2021
There are several works by Dalí and Picasso here, which makes the museum worth visiting. It was under construction when I visited in July 2021, but we still got to see Guernica.

Must go for modern art lovers
Jul 2021
We took a private tour of 2 hours, and covered all the major paintings and sculptures. The highlights are Picasso and Dali.

Picasso's Guernica is displayed here and it was great to learn about the history of this great work.

Personally I love Dalí, Picasso, and all of their friends (and not friends) so every piece fascinates in this large, maze of a museum.
Currently dealing with Covid measures, it is a bit harder to navigate, but I try to relish the magic of getting lost in a museum, just hope nothing comes alive while Im trying to escape a room full of surrealist sculptures.
So dont hesitate to ask the nice staff to help guide you.
Guernica is amazing, of course, but my personal favorite is a tie between the wall of 1940 to 50s war propaganda posters, and the room with Buñuel film clips. And Man Ray and his visual artist friends are pretty great too.
If you dont mind lots of people, try free evenings (I suggest getting tickets before hand).

Big disappointment
Jul 2021 • Family
We have just finished visiting the museum reina sofia in Madrid and all the family is very disappointed:
- no indications, we got lost, could not come back where we wanted….
- no explanations on the rooms and pictures
- nobody told us where to find anytthing nor that it would have been free later
Really i will never come back and advise that museum i just lost my money

Guernica is the reason to visit this museum
Jul 2021
If you enjoy Dali and modern art, this would be a little more interesting. The biggest reason to go to this museum is to see Guernica. There were so many sections that were closed off so we were unable to see much of the collection which was very disappointing. This is no where near the level of the Prado or the Thyssen- Bornemisza.Better to spend more time at either one of those.
