Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Best market in Spain
Sep 2021 • Couples
We have been to numerous markets throughout northern Spain in the last few weeks. This one is just brimming with delicious tapas and edible items. Particularly clean. Great place for a snack or quick lunch.

A wonder of food and drink
Sep 2021 • Couples
Some many wonderful stalls here with a great variety of superb food and drink. Everyone can find something for their own taste. We had the croquettes, ham, empernadas, beer and wine. We could have stayed there all day

The market itself is charming and vibrant. I loved the atmosphere. I tried food at most of the stalls and to be honest it's just average quality food. You'd be better off eating at a local tapas bar.

Buzzy, popular marketplace turned food hall
Aug 2021 • Family
One of the must sees in town, this crowded former marketplace turned food-hall is popular as much with tourists as with locals for tapas of varying quality. Most of the fish, meat and ham tapas is delicious and reasonably priced although we were disappointed with a couple stands selling deceptive looking portions (King crab stand, I’m talking about you). Grab a beer or glass of wine and wander, hitting the most crowded places, you won’t be disappointed.

Great place in Madrid
Aug 2020
It is a very interesting tourist attraction. Very center located. It is worth visiting and watching amazing Spanish specialties, hams, cheeses, olives, fish and seafood. Perfect to enjoy local delicacies. Everyone will find something for themselves. Touristic and expensive but very nice inside. Mandatory stopover during your visit to Madrid.

Charming, full of flavours market!
Sep 2020
This colorful, full of flavors market offers a great choice of Spanish and other dishes. Very full of people during all day. So it's bit hard to find free table, so just grab some food and drink and enjoy the atmosphere! Watch your bags:)

Beautiful and tasty dishes but pricey and not suitable if you fear covid transmission
Jun 2021 • Family
Fun place, beutiful and tasty small dishes. The snacks are pieces of art.
Not for those on a budget since everything is pricey. Not for those unvaccinated or with fear or airborne infections, it is busy and only a few people wear masks

Upmarket Market where you can Sample Traditional Foods
Feb 2020
Having just been to the local food markets in Barcelona, this was different to what I expected. It's not the place to go to buy your local veg or groceries. Instead, it is a collection of upmarket stalls selling gourmet hams, olives, oysters and seafood and traditional pintxos, tapas, tortillas and paellas. I particularly liked the banderillas (small skewers of olives, anchovies and peppers) and the croquettes.
We went in the morning but if I was planning it again, I’d do two things differently. I would go in the early evening instead for a drink and snacks before dinner. I would also have headed here before visiting Retiro Parque to pick up some picnic supplies to eat beside the lake.
I can see that some reviews have said that it is over-priced and something of a tourist trap. Whilst you can probably hunt around and find food more cheaply elsewhere, I would still recommend going here. For one thing, it’s all very colourful and enormously appealing. The food is high quality and fresh and is gathered together under the one roof so you can easily sample a range of things. Wine/beer kiosks allow you to sit and have a drink at the same time. It’s an attractive space, set under-cover in a large wrought iron and glass structure that was once one of Madrid’s original food market, built in 1916.
GETTING THERE: It is easy to visit this market from Plaza Mayor. It is only a minute or two walk around the corner.

Do not miss out on this place when in Madrid
Nov 2019 • Family
This market provides the funniest and most complete culinary tour of Madrid all in one place. The market has dozens of walk up eateries and sangria/ beer shops that allows you a complete tasting of Madrid’s most common dishes. Small tastings of practically all dishes and products available.
