What a delightful surprise!
Sep 2019
We arrived, without knowing it, ten days before the Festival of San Tecla, the patron saint of Tarragona, and learned only by chance of this delightful and fascinating collections of objects and images of the upcoming celebrations. Housed in a modest building beneath the Archeological Museum and the Historical Museum, the Casa de la Festa offers a rare and wonderful glimpse into an important local holidays with fascinating customs. Most of the imaginary monsters and giant figures (some weighing up to 95 kilos and carried on one man's shoulders!!!) are here. There is also clear and fascinating documentation of the rest of the festivals: dances,, parades, and thew phenomenal "castellos" (towers of men standing on successive stories of shoulders, five or six men high!).

There were children here when we visited: what a delight!

Wonderful display

We have a 3 year old. What do you do on a hot day in terragona with a preschooler? Go to the casa de la festa. It is free, air conditioned, has bathrooms, and best of all- gigantes! My preschooler lives the giants at festivals so we knew this would be a hit. It was. We spent probably 30 min because preschoolers move fast and it is not a big museum.

It was good last time, but it was great this time

I popped in here in 2011 when I visited and thought it was really interesting, I love learning about local culture. Also, not very often you find something targeted at tourists which is free! When I cam back in 2016 I was keen to go again. They have made it a lot more interactive now, with videos and more festival displays. There has been a lot of investment, yet it is still free. It is only small, so can be done in an hour, but definitely worth a visit. Suitable and interesting for all ages.

Understanding local traditions better
Sep 2014
It is very interesting to see all these picturesque animals and guys that are the stars of "fiestas" in Tarragona and understanding local traditions better but...
The premises are a disgrace!!!! The place is falling to pieces, water from the roof leaks in when it rains, the wall paint chips off. Tarragona's Town Hall keeps promising to invest money in repairs that never seem to get done. They are even considering moving to another place. Meanwhile I don't know whether I'd recommend a visit...
