About
Basilica de la Sagrada Familia is a church devoted to the Holy Family. One of Antoni Gaudi’s most famous works, the church is perhaps best known for still being under construction since 1882—with works funded purely by donations. Take a lift to the top of the towers for a panoramic view of the city and marvel at the ornate architecture. The nativity facade and crypt have also been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status. Skip the line with a pre-booked tour with tower access, or combine your visit with another of Gaudi's work, Parc Guell. – Tripadvisor

Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

    A must do in Barcelona!
Just wow, take a tour and make sure you go to the top of one of the towers. This church is stunning and well worth the experience. Make sure you check out the museum in the lower level as well

As they said about Lola Flores: "She neither sings nor dances but don't miss her"
When visiting this church I remembered the phrase they say about Lola Flores: "She neither sings nor dances but don't miss her." In other words this church is indescribable and I have never seen anything like it in my life. If the exterior is already striking, the interior exceeds all expectations. I don't know if I like it or not but the construction is unique and a visit should not be missed. What I don't recommend is climbing the towers because the views seem like a joke to me.

    This is a must see!
At the entrance you are forced to undergo an unpleasant and overly thorough search, after which the search at the airport already seems like child's play. But this was the only unpleasant moment. We arrived before the appointed time and were let in immediately. At the entrance to the temple, a man approached us and suggested that we were entitled to an audio guide, although we had completely forgotten about it. He brought us two sets of audio guides and set them to the language we needed. There is plenty of seating inside. Nobody rushed us. We sat there for quite a long time because it was raining outside. During this time, we were able to get a good look at the incredibly beautiful internal architecture of the temple, as well as feel its unique atmosphere and history.

    BREATH TAKING
This place is undeniably breathtaking, when you get out at the subway station your jaw will literally drop. When we were there live music coming from an Oregon and it was so cool! The design and architecture here is very amusing for people who enjoy that type of stuff, but for lots of people this place is not really a must see, it can get very crowded and hot around the basilica and it is quite expensive to enter. But if you enjoy history architecture and sight seeing this place is definitely worth the visit! Free tours with headphones and an experienced guide are offered!!

Going to Barcelona and not visiting the Sagrada Familia Church is the same as going to Paris and not visiting the Eifel Tower. We did not enter the church, as tickets must be purchased in advance. But what matters is that you keep observing the exterior details. Sit on a bench, take your time and enjoy this work by Gaudi. Although it is not complete, it is different from all the other thousands of churches you will visit in Europe.

The internal light show makes this worth it
What an amazing place. Absolutely crazy looking at it from the outside but then you enter this most beautiful and powerful building with fabulous natural light show created by the amazing stained glass windows. Well worth a visit and the entrance fee is well worth it👍 I would suggest getting a ticket and slot before you arrive… it can get busy

    The heyday in Barcelona
The Sagrada Familia is an unmissable visit in Barcelona. I recommend visiting with a pre-purchased ticket (online) with an audio guide in Portuguese. Although there are always many visitors, entry is relatively quick, as it requires a search similar to that at an airport. In the interior space, it is possible to see everything at one's own pace, listen to the audio, sit down, enjoy everything without rushing. Visiting on a sunny day will always be more valuable, as natural light gives the stained glass windows a unique beauty.

    Monument to visit
Visit with the guide Anna who speaks French very well and explains the history of the Sagrada perfectly She gives all the little details of this magnificent monument, the price is not given but no regrets for having done it, compensation for the work... Almost 4 hours on site You should visit the tower, be careful if you are afraid of heights, almost 400 steps to go down in a narrow passage

Great Guided Tour of this Magnificent Church
We pre-booked a timed guided tour which facilitated our entry and avoided the expected waiting since it was still quite crowded for a weekday in January. We had a little time before our tour started so we went inside to get a head start on our gawking! The magnificent colors from the stained glass windows were amazing along with the soaring architecture. The organ was even practicing for a short burst. When we met up with the tour guide we started on the outside. I enjoyed both the Passion, original Gaudi, and Nativity, modern, sides. Less ongoing construction than what we recall from our first visit years ago and she pointed many of the latest additions to the basilica. We proceeded to slowly walk through the inside and then wrapped up the tour in the adjacent school room, where the workers would send their kids while working. Before we left, we walked through the museum on our own and saw the work shop, plaster originals, details about the architects before and after Gaudi, etc. The guided tour was worth it in opinion due to the details, insights and Q&A.

    The amazing Sagrada Familia
Hands down one of the most impressive and beautiful structures man has ever made. Sagrada Familia is a must visit for anyone travelling to Barcelona. Breathtaking construction and beautiful interiors wit stained windows which when hit by sunlight bathes the church interior with amazing colours

This was one place that we both wanted to visited in Barcelona. And we weren’t disappointed. The Basilica was a breath taking sight to behold. And that was just the outside!

We bought tickets on line and got the audio guide which I recommend is worth getting as it fully explains about the history of the building and the on going construction of the Basilica, though it’s worth getting the tickets before you visit. There is a Metro stop solely for the Basilica. Entry to the sight is through security similar to airport security.

The audio guide builds you up to the inside. And once inside words could not describe the stunning beauty and peaceful tranquility. Colours shone through the windows. Internally was bright and spacious. It was a surprise to find a crypt inside the Basilica.

The stone carvings were life like and were in different architectural styles.

This is really a do not miss sight. The only thing that surprised us was the towers aren’t as tall as you think.

One word of warning. There are numerous beggars around. The cynical part of me feels they are trying to play on some visitors religious beliefs to donate money.

I recommend booking tickets well in advance to see the entirety of this wonderful place, as you can rarely get tickets on the day. To say this place exceeded our expectations would be an understatement - as its awe inspiring. Work still continues to extend and improve it to this day, with it being an ongoing feat of art and architecture. Easily set aside 2-3 hours, as you can also spend time in the many adjacent food outlets which are surprisingly good value. A definite must see for all ages.

I went on a solo trip in September last year, so not the busiest time of the year - shoulder season/months.

I hadn’t purchased my ticket in advance. This was primarily because I didn’t want to be tied down to a specific date and time, in case I ended up doing something different miles away from there during the booked time! The other reason is that tickets aren’t available if you leave it too late, for example, even a week before you travel or visit Sagrada.

This is why I highly recommend purchasing a ticket in advance. *You will also avoid the long queues.* Luckily it wasn’t too bad - it being in September. I mean I still had to wait for a good 45 minutes if not more. I’ve heard the queues go round on the outside, stretching for God knows how long. Mine was bad enough.

The other benefit of booking in advance is that you can choose your time. If you’re buying on the spot, and want to get in ASAP, the next entry may be an hour or two away, if not more, as it was in my case. So, as you’ll have gathered by now, loads of time wasted by not buying online advance.

Finally, it’s also cheaper. I could’ve bought the basic ticket (no audio guide) for €17 online, with the added advantage as stated above of instant entry, i.e. no queuing. Instead I had no option but to go for the only available ticket which was with the audio guide for twice the price - €34! All well worth it in the end though.

Hope this helped. Sorry to have kept it too long! :)

The most beautiful cathedral I have ever visited. Every element of the Sagrada Familia was purposly designed and flawlessly executed to create this amazing piece of history. I have visited multiple times and even lived minutes away, many years ago and I still marvel at the beauty of this building.
*TIP* Always book in advance if you want to visit inside, I would recommend at least a day in advance and it is well worth the visit, however it is not worth paying to ascend the towers, as the view is not particularly remarkable, its a little expensive and the staircase to go down is small, winding and can be unsettling for a lot of people. Also, eat beforehand or afterwards, do not bother with the restaurants surrounding the basilica, as they are tourist traps and are very expensive.

We booked as part of the Julia hop on/ hop off bus tours offer.85 euro for the bus pays 2 attractions. We had a guided tour (included) at 4 pm. Meeting at the Julia office just up the road from the Sagrada Familia itself.
Our guide was very informative and spoke excellent English-also speaking in Spanish for other group members. It takes a while to get tickets/through security etc but is worth the standing, and the waiting. After a detailed explanation of the outside construction we went inside to be greeted by an amazing display of colour flooding in through the stained glass windows. This was at approx 5 pm as the sun was starting to set. Truly spectacular. We were not rushed and had extra time, after the guided tour finished, to enjoy the atmosphere and peace that the Basilica offered...despite being busy it truly was beautiful and inspiring. Well worth the guided tour to help you fully appreciate Gaudi's vision.

This is a dream come true first visit to Spain to see this incredible jaw dropping creation. Absolutely beautiful and fascinating church. Sir Gaudí is a genius!
I bought tickets online for a 9am time slot prior to arriving in Barcelona. Opted out the tower tour and guided tour. But you will definitely needed the audio guide. It’s very educational. It was pouring hard on the day of our visit so it’s not crowded and the guards will not let you in until opening time of 9am. We spent at least 3 hours. Plenty of time to pray, take pictures, shop and just enjoy everything in front of you. Souvenirs are reasonably priced and just remember that when you buy at the shop, you’re contributing to the foundation.

This was the favorite part of the trip for both my wife and I. The place is truly magnificent inside and out. Seeing the outside does NOT give you a preview of what to expect inside. Other than it’s just as amazing.

I’ve been to many awesome churches/cathedrals/basilicas and this one is my new favorite. It is not medieval or gothic, and the inside especially is more modern, but not to say conventional at all. The whole place is just very grand and artistic.

We had the audio tour tickets which included access to the main structure only, meaning no tower access, and no crypt access. I’d read that the towers were not worth the money and I didn’t even recall options to see the crypt, so I can’t give opinions on those aspects. One thing I disliked about the audio tour was that, though informative, they are basically phones you hang around your neck so you have to dedicate a hand to that activity which makes taking photos and listening at the same time difficult (holding a cell phone to your ear with your shoulder is not the easiest thing).

We went at 10:30am on a Sunday, a good time evidently because it was not crowded when we got in there. Very few people ahead of us or with us actually. But as we were leaving I think the tour groups began because the amount of people inside had easily tripled or more. It was much more crowded and not as peaceful. Even outside was more crowded. So I would suggest earlier entries if possible.

It was hard to tell but I think the inside has relatively little to be finished (expected completion for the whole site is in 2026). The outside has the main spire left, obviously. Anyway, don’t avoid this because you think you’re going into a construction site filled with scaffolding and tarps. And even if you’ve seen the rest of Gaudis big works through Barcelona, don’t think you’ll know what to expect inside this. It’s very unique even among his stuff.

This cathedral is a must while in Barcelona. We were all a little underwhelmed after the expensive entry fee.
Buy tickets online before you get there. There are crowds all around automatic ticket machines making it hard to get to them.
You have to buy audio tour unless you wait until after 4 which brings a large amount of people.
The place is huge! The amount of work that went into this is evident - intricate sculptures and depictions everywhere. It's the hugeness inside that I find cold and standoffish.

Audio tour is through and allows you to move about without having to crowd around info signs. Kids don't have to buy the audio tour and they will even give you headphones so you can both listen at same time.

Glad we saw it. Everyone we interacted with were helpful and very pleasant. There is a place to buy tickets if either you don't have a credit card to the line is too long. Definitely hidden away.

Visited after a visit 15 years ago and to see the development progress was amazing.

Stunning site and is everything and more you expect it to be. It’s very tourist heavy though so buy your tickets in advance or you won’t get in unless your very lucky and after queuing for hours. Having researched this in advance we didn’t make that mistake. However I would highly recommend when booking online you must get an audio guide as there is so much you will miss on the history of the building design and it’s architect Gaudi without it.

A must visit!

The cornerstone of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia was laid in 1882, but Gaudi took over the design and construction in 1883. From 1914 until his death in 1926, he devoted all of his time to this project. Because no government funds have been used, the church continues to be built very slowly—relying on donations. In 2005 UNESCO declared it a “World Heritage Site,” and in 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated it as a minor basilica. Apparently, Gaudi originally neglected to get a building permit, so now the church has acquired millions of dollars in fines, in addition to the continued building costs. The entrance fees from 3,000,000 visitors each year + donations keep the project going. Although the façade did seem like it had developed more since our last visit (over 20 years ago), we agreed that it still looks like a big mess, with cranes sticking out everywhere. The “glory façade” (front section) does have the colorful mosaic tops and interesting tall spires characteristic of Gaudi, but the back really has no color—all muddy brown—and there are so many things going on that it is hard to focus. We did not try to visit the inside, since there were still large crowds—even at 7:15 pm. Despite all the criticism, it is an awe-inspiring building, the likes of which you will not see anywhere else in the world—so definitely a must-see in Barcelona.
