About
Azkuna Zentroa is the centre for art and culture located right in the heart of Bilbao and is housed in one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, the former municipal wine exchange market. Refurbished and restored by Philippe Starck, Azkuna Zentroa has a diverse cultural programme where art, knowledge, design, science, new technologies and literature converge, as well as a varied physical activity offering. A multipurpose and contemporary centre where disciplines, contents and the general public are interrelated, which increases the cultural level of the general public and contributes to the enrichment of Bilbao and its internationalisation.

An ex warehouse with a fab redesign. All the pillars holding the building up inside are art works in their own right. Really clever idea. There is a terrace on the roof with some nice views but alas nothing up there - a shame. Would be a great place for a restaurant.

Starck left his mark here and transformed cleverly an old building by giving it a modern touch without ruining it. Absolutely worth seeing. The shop selling basque design is also very good. Will visit again if I come back.

It is worth seeing this building but it really contains offices. The pillars on the ground floor are all different and creatively designed. Worth seeing.

This is a large edifice, open to all, which contains all sorts of community spaces - fitness, library, art, etc. We walked through the large ground floor area and observed the different columns holding up the building - each is a work of art on its own.

Fascinating to see the different pillars holding up the structure. When we were there it was very quiet. The exhibitions that were there were We are Code - downstairs and on the main floor which was interactive and really interesting. Outside there were 3 paintings on the facade if the building.
The cinema is on the lower floor and more activities upstairs.
The cafe was good for lunch.

It is actually one of my favourite buildings in Bilbao.
Done by Philippe Stark, this is a council building hosting a public gym and pool, funtion rooms, a lovely ludotec and a great lobby giving access to 4 different streets where you can rest in peace, also meet friends or find shelter from rain.
Just in front of this building you find a white one in a square, home of the SPRI, the basque department for international promotion of Basque industry, technology and ideosincracy wordwide, supported by a network of Trade missions embassies in dozens of countries covering the 4 continents.

It's a modern structure inside a monumental old front walls, with a large public area with modern art, coffee bar, cinema, a municipality cultural center, and an amazing terrace restaurant on top east floor.

Philippe Starck's addition to the shell of a former wine and oil warehouse was remarkable. This really feels like a building of community for Bilbao's citizens: a library, cultural center, sports club, restaurant - I was just glad to be able to enter it as a visitor. We went on a Monday so the temporary exhibit was closed, but we were able to see some of the public art on show. Restaurant within does a really great lunch deal and people in the visitor center / shop were friendly and happy to share info.

From the outside the Azkuna Zentroa may appear like a mock medieval castle. However, the building which was once a corn exchange was transformed into a cultural centre and opened in 2010. The ground floor when you enter holds a large empty area, with numerous thick pillars and each pillar of a different design. On the edges are, amongst other things are an information centre and a WC. Upstairs holds a restaurant, multiplex cinema, some shops and a swimming pool, which has a glass bottom. When you are on the ground floor, if you look up you will see the swimmers above you. The ground floor is extremely dark, which sadly makes it uninviting. The building though is fascinating and well worth your time visiting.

The Azkuna Zentroa, a venue, labeled as a "Culture and Leisure Centre", consisting of a cinema multiplex, a fitness center, a library, showrooms, an auditorium, shops, and a restaurant. As we walked in, we could see why our guide brought us there. It was quite a place. The decorated pillars were quite a sight on their own, but the fact that they totally gutted the historical building and turned it into this multi-use modern facility was quite a feat. The video image that looked like the sun was an unusual articstic touch.
