Cisco Viejo is just lovely, a beautiful place to wander and brimful of lovely cafes, shops and gorgeous, venerable old buildings.
The highlight for me was the Cathedral which is well worth a visit and there are many other beguiling churches like Ssn Antonio. Plaza Nueva was also especially charming.
The real joy is just to wonder around though, its got such character and has plenty going on without ever bring overly crowded- though though I expect it will be packed in the summer heat
Anyway, a highlight of any trip to Bilbao.

We visited in February & the place was really quiet with no atmosphere. A few nice independent businesses but many closed. I’m sure it’s nice in the summer.

We loved just walking into Casco Viejo. It is the touristy part, but it is nice. Now my candid review? You need to be careful during ANY holiday ANY city. This was one of the safest cities in Spain I have been in, but I was almost mugged. I was saved by a good Samaritan, but don't have a lot of things in your pockets in big crowds. But please, don't let this scare you. I only say this for you to be more aware. Enjoy, have fun!

You may bump into people because you are so busy staring at the architecture. Building lining the streets will have you in awe. Whether it be the doors, terraces, or roof tops, there is so much to see. Also, this area is loaded with pintxos food shops and bars. Take your time. Stroll the streets. People watch. Take lots of photos. It is a beautiful blend of several eras of architecture all in this area. Worth spending a couple of hours here when in Bilbao.

A wonderful area to stroll around. Charming and authentic, lots of little alleys and picturesque squares. Highly recommend for wandering around in the late afternoon and early evening, stopping here and there for a drink and a pinxtos.

This was an eye opener. We joined another tour and was lead around the old city by a guide who clearly loved the city and new it very intimately. Bilbao really is a lovely city -young and vibrant and we saw some beautiful buildings but more importantly saw the joy in the people’s hearts, it was a great tour.

A part of our guided tour was an introduction to Casco Viejo. I could not stop smiling!
I just love all the balconies with beautiful flowers, all the colours and just the feel of the place.

We stayed in the area. It might not have been quite as posh as other areas but being able to just go right out and wander the lanes, eat, browse, and just people watch made for the best experience. Definitely had more of a locals vibe than some old towns which may be more touristy. Definitely recommend coming here and allowing yourself some time to just wander and absorb the environment!

Have loved exploring the Casco Viejo over the last couple of days. Each 'kalea' offers a new and intriguing slice of Bilbao life and architecture. Although there are many tourists here, like myself, it does not feel overrun by us, and a strong local presence still remains.

Sorry I cannot be of any help. I was looking at the sights and enjoying the food, so didn't notice any hair salons of which I am sure there are many. Good luck.

Likely to be cold and wet. Low around 6-8 deg C but that's warmer than UK.
