For me, the roof tour was a highlight of the visit as it gave a completely different view of both the inside of the cathedral, from a couple of viewpoints, as well as the outside roof and tower details that you cannot see otherwise. As the steps up to the roof could be considered to be quite narrow you cannot take large backpacks but a smaller backpack ( size of an average handbag ) is allowed. In fact I would advise that a small backpack is preferable to a shoulder or handbag as it frees up your hands during the climb up.. and down the stairs.
