The main church was built between 1260 and 1410 in Gothic style by the Catholic Church. The two steeples weren't added until 1909, despite they are not that old they do look old and very beautiful. Since 1581 due to Protestant Reformation the church became Lutheran.

Unfortunately I did not come to this area during the day when anything was open, but it was almost like a bonus that I was able to roam the area on a Sunday night with zero tourists or locals on the grounds. It was an amazing structure. Driving to the city, it almost takes you by surprise as you round... More

This Gothic cathedral enjoys a beautiful setting at the highest point of Meissen, and the interior space is impressive - you can climb up to galleries to enjoy a bird's eye view of the nave. The sculpture over the west door and the various altarpieces are also well worth seeing. However, the information around the cathedral and on the leaflet... More

A very nice gothic cathedral architecture, which is unusual in a country where baroque is so dominant. The black stones make for a surprising contrast next to the white painted castle. Lightening destroyed the west towers in 1413 and left only the east one standing for 5 centuries until the west towers were reconstructed (1909) in neogothic style. But you... More

Meissen is a very nice village with several sights to see. The Dom is a landmark on top of the hill. The road up from the village square is not too steep and doable for most walkers. Actually it is a nice walk. You have to pay for admission to the Dom which is unusual. The inside is OK but... More

Gothic building with some interesting spaces. The best is the interior armony and the chapel of the "entrance" (even if it is accessible from the inside...). Nice sculptures in the choir chapel. Look for the combined ticket with the Schloss...

By the entrance one steps in the darkness. However, immediately one steps with the first steps in the light which illuminates the rays of the sun the space by the windows. This church amazes me in every visit anew and lets me be curious every time which facet of the construction will anew impress me.

An immense and dark cathedral to explore! Some fascinating nooks and crannies with religious art and a very interesting and graphic pieta. But the real treat is getting on a tour (only in German but I didn't mind) up the towers! They were added in the early 19000's but still are remarkable and offer a view of the countryside that...
