I visited the zoo in the beginning of April 2022. I loved every aspect of the visit. The animals seem to be extremely happy, we could see many of them. The seals are extremely playful, and definitely one of the highlights. I also like the fact that the zoo has real size replicas of dinosaurs. The staff is amazing, the food service is great.
The zoo is huge, so my suggestion is to select what you are more interested in seeing.
I am only a bit concerned because it seems there will be an attraction with tamed animals, which to me defeat the purpose of a zoo. Particularly this one, where we can see there is a real consideration with the animal wellbeing.

For me the best experience/adventure was the boat tour but even that could have been longer or included in the price of the ticket.
I think Leipzig ZOO is very expensive, not only the entrance fee (more than 50€ for the family is alot of money) even coffee and everything was overpriced!!!
The jungle is very nicely done but some animals were hard to find and to our disappoitment for example we never found "the faultier" the sloth to which we were the most looking forward as a family!!!! Very enjoyable were koalas!!!
The ZOO is pretty but not the best in Germany!
You need at least 4 hours to see everything but be prepared there are going to be many people and many many loud children and babies!!!
3,5* somewhere between average and very good. So good.

Very nice zoo. Good condition for the animals. Many interesting animals. Beautiful landscaping and very good playgrounds for the kids.
Especially loved the tropical dome and the savanna.

We went to the main station and then took the Tram right to the Zoo, but you can also easily walk the distance. The Zoo opened its doors at 9am (and it’s open between 5pm and 7pm depending on the Months. Best check the homepage for the detailed list) and we stood in line to have our vaccination status checked. Then we got our tickets, which cost 18€ for adults from November until 20th March. From 21st March on, they cost 22€.
Inside we were greeted by a statue of a Dinosaur – and to the joy of my best friend, they had even more Dinosaurs all over the Zoo. I am not even sure if we managed to see all of them.
The Zoo is not small by any means, and has 6 theme worlds: Founder’s Garden, Asia, Gondwanaland, Pongoland, Africa and South America.
If you're planning to head there, let me tell you one thing: definitely head to Gondwanaland first. It's truly stunning and we sadly went there last and missed a lot!

Leipzig Zoo is a wonderful place to spend a day with family and friends; as it is one of the species rich Zoos in Europe. The Zoological garden as it is called has been remodeled and expanded as the 'Zoo of the Future'. The staff are also actively engaged in conservation breeding of rare species. It is a popular and must visit place in the City for any visitor. One can view different varieties and species of Giraffes, Zebra, Tiger, Leopard, Lion, Panther, Elephant, Gorilla, Orangutan, Chimpanzee, Hyenas, Swan, Lamas, Deer, Ostrich, Polar Bear, Parrots, Birds and many many more. It is a pleasure to watch the animals through the glass screens placed at most places. There are Cafes where one can enjoy drinks and snacks.

The website is informative and can be translated into English but reverts to German when you try to book so this was tricky so I went in person and waited 35 minutes instead to queue from 9.20am to get in. It seemed very slow and very disorganised but I think it was a half term. The website explains why there’s primarily natural barriers to the habitats and a rationale to remove cages etc. This probably improves the size of space the animals have and can be sometimes why you may not see an animal which others have noted but that’s not a bad thing. I like this about it and know it’s a well regarded zoo. Generally the zoo was excellent and has all the main animals you want to see. The different cafes utilised the themes and outdoor spaces well and I enjoyed sitting outside watching the. Giraffes and zebras etc from the cafe. Prices seemed ok and there’s plenty of space too in the zoo for family picnics. The covered rain forest area was really great and the water ride ok at 1.5 euro. My main criticism is that there were no other zoo maps bar German ones and whilst English I can’t speak German but I can manage some conversational Spanish and French. I got a German one in the end to see the animal pictures! The zoo was poorly signed throughout compared to most zoos so that was the main negative feedback. I would go again and it seem great for families. There’s a long zoo heritage so I wish them well. They are instrumental in coordinating European and world wide programmes.

We wanted to have a weekend break with our two kids from 4 and 11. We decided to visit Leipzig specifically because of its zoo. Compared to other top European zoo, we found that the 54€ family ticket was great value for money. We stayed from 9h30 to 17h30, almost from the opening to the closure. The kids enjoyed alternatively watching the animals and the playgrounds. For each playground, there is coffee place, snack or restaurant making the visit and a great experience for everyone.

I have family in Leipzig and have been to the zoo many many times. It is one of the nicest zoos I know. The animals seem happy, the enclosures are fairly big (thus sometimes you won't be able to spot an animal but it's important to give them the option to hide so I don't mind that at all) and theres a large variety of animals you can observe.
This is the first time I have been to the zoo since Covid and it wasn't as great an experience as it used to be. Firstly, in order to comply with the 2G rule, visitors had to queue to show their Covid status. The queue outside followed the main road and it took us approximately 45 minutes to get to the entrance. That's 45 minutes standing next to a busy road with a fed up toddler. Lots of peoole around us were smoking which made the experience even worse. No one was keeping their distance either (mind you, we would have probably ended up in a queue up to the Höfe am Brühl if people had kept their distance....).
By the time we made it to the entrance our son was quite fed up. I think it would have been better to introduce a system that allowed people to book an arrival slot, e.g. 9-10, 10-11, 11-12 etc. to avoid thhis ridiculous queue.
Once inside, people were not following the rules very well, especially when it comes to distancing. My son got pushed around quite a bit. We also visited one of the restaurants and I deeply regretted it later. It was the Marche next to the giraffe enclosure. It was madness. People were hopping all over the place and at the salad bar a lady got so close I was close to asking her to get me drink first, she was literally leaning on me. The food was mediocre but very expensive. I would definitely get fries or a Bratwurst from one of tye many huts next time.
The Bärenspielplatz was an absolute highlight for our son! He absolutely loved it.
In short, it is an amazing place, eell worth a visit but I think there were too many people, especially since everyone wanted to enter more or less around the same time.

It’s a zoo, a typical zoo? I’m from Ireland and it is just as good as Dublin zoo. I don’t think it is worth €22... a lot of the animals were impossible to spot when we went (morning into early afternoon).
So yeah, worth seeing if your in Leipzig for a few days, but not worth going to Leipzig for the zoo!

There were simply too many visitors allowed into the zoo and crowds and long queues were formed everywhere where the animals were...not only that, there were very few animals to be seen in each category of animals...I've been to many zoos in the world..Singapore zoo, Prague zoo etc..the price person for this zoo is too expensive.

Предлагаются ли посетителям при входе тележки для ручной клади?
Есть ли на территории зоопарка кафе?
Спасибо!

Im thinking of going in February or March and wonder how would it be like? What is a good period to visit?

February/March will be quite chilly with the possibility of rain, but it's a lovely zoo and would be great to visit at any time of year, just dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
Hola! Quisiera saber si se puede ingresar con bebidas o comida dentro del zoológico? Claro para consumo propio no para los animales!!

That's insane. U never ever see everything and have enough time in three hours! I would spent one day at the open area and one day in Gondwana land ... if you rush through u miss all the details and especially if u have kids wich play at bärenburg for hours! Take your time it's worth it.
