Mystery
Sep 2020
We passed this crane on a bike tour and were intrigued by it: what was it?? As there is not information anywhere, we were left puzzled. Only when we saw a similar crane in a different city, we understood that it was built for hoisting loads from cargo ships.

An easy stroll along the river banks bring you to the two old cranes. The cranes are beautifully kept. Although you cannot go inside you can still see the wheels through the opening

Some cranes along the river
Jan 2018 • Couples
These old cranes have been restaured and we can see how they were used when there was much more commerce along the river and so it was necessary to take goods from the boats.

Beautiful industrial building
Sep 2018 • Solo
Old crane is located at the Mosel riverbank just a few steps from the younger crane, not too far from Roman Bridge. It is a beautiful industrial building, most probably not worth a separate trip but definitely interesting enough to visit once in Trier. It is in a good condition, picturesque and photogenic and through the small windows at its lower part you can see wooden wheels which used to move the crane.

Don’t make a special trip for this
Oct 2017 • Couples
After spending a day in Trier. We realized that they don’t spend much time or money promoting their historical sites. We walked to the Roman bridge and the crane sites and found no informational signs or anything explaining the history. On our way back we walked past an old historical fortification along kaiserstrasse, but again no information or signs. Out of sheer curiosity I googled the site when I got home to find out what it was. Bottom line is don’t waste any time walking to these sites unless you just feel like going for a walk.

Rare sight along the river !
Apr 2017 • Couples
We saw these cranes while taking a boat tour along the Mosel ! I had never seen this type of crane and after some research , I have found that they are quite rare . From a distance they seemed to be in good condition , not workable but esthetically speaking .

Nice sight on the Moselle embankment
Mar 2017 • Friends
While taking a walk we came across this old crane (1413) at the end of Krahnenstrasse, the former site of Trier’s inland harbour on the Moselle River. It replaced a wooden floating crane. The construction was treadwheel-operated by manpower and had only one boom. In 1778 a second jib arm was added. It’s a nice thing that is had been restored, because cranes of this type are rare.

Nice walk along the river
Aug 2016 • Solo
If you take a walk from the Roman Bridge along the river Mosel down the stream on the right bank of the river, you will bump into this interesting technical structure. It is a bit of the main touristic sites and nice to see though it seems a bit worn out by the squatters with lots of garbage thrown around. If you go, do not make it the main reason for walking in this area of Trier. It is far from the center and good if you pass by on a romantic walk on the river bank.

Strolling along the Mosel
Jun 2016 • Couples
Quiet close to the old roman bridge one can see the two old Mosel-cranes. The surroundings are very beautiful: you are walking on the bank of the river and can enjoy the nice sights of the bridge and barges sailing by. Historical value of this old cranes might be rather limited but through the small windows one can see the treadmill in which people once walked to make the crane move and work.

Old but the river side is better
Jul 2015 • Solo
The crane dates back to the 15th century. There is nothing particular about it. However, its presence among the beautiful bank side of the Mosel is an addition that adds to the charm of the whole area. You can see it easily if you simply walk along the trail beside the river.
