Interesting piece of roman history
Dec 2019
The gate tells an interesting piece of Roman history and how they must have found the rhineland so suitable for occupation. The Moselle river would have been an ideal location for settlement. From here, the rest of the old town makes for an enjoyable walk around.

Historic Roman Gate
May 2018 • Friends
I have to recommend to anyone who visits Trier in Germany to make sure you go and see The Porta Nigra. It's a large Roman city gate. It started construction in 170AD so has got loads of history connected to it. It just looks amazing and it's absolutely free to go and see. If you like amazing buildings and you like your photos. Take 15 minutes out for yourself and go see this piece of amazing history.

Impressive ancient structure
Sep 2017 • Business
The ancient city gate stands alongside the main road into town (as you would expect) it has no barriers, so you can just walk around and in the courtyard.
Like many ancient city buildings, the stonework appears to have been blackened by the traffic fumes, and I suspect due to its age and the type of stone used in the construction its probably too delicate for aggressive cleaning.
The black could be considered part of the charm.
Its a nice place to visit.

Give this city a miss
Sadly, one admittedly historic Roman gate, and one Cathedral do not justify a visit yet another rather bleak, austere and excessively cobbled inner city.

Unique Old Black Gate
When I arrived here, I was amazed how unique this black gate for me. I could imagine how beautiful it was and still we could see its remains beautiful until now.

Porta Negra
Nov 2014 • Couples
Visited the ruin of the above. Nothing special though of course there is historic interest. It is accessible from one end of one of the main shopping thoroughfares.

Not so impressive
I know I may be being a bit picky but I thought this attraction would be a bit more larger for one of the first roman structures ever built. It was pretty neat to see how dated the architecture was but it was not something I must have done while in Germany. The town leading up to the porta negro is lovely though with many boutiques and restaurants. The area is very affable with a lot to offer to tourist.

Step back in time
Sep 2014 • Couples
This old enterance to the city allows you to go back in time. There is a small fee to pay but definitely worth while.
