This place offers a great deal of information, but perhaps I just expected too much. Most of the ships inside were replicas. Worth a trip at least.

I was a little worried about visiting this museum because other reviews indicated that the were few English descriptions. I am happy to report that nearly every panel in the museum has at least a small English description. It was nice to see the ancient hulls and the modern reconstructions side by side in this museum. The use of secondary... More

This is a very nice museum showcasing the art of roman shipbuilding with a replicas of different ships and boats. It also touches on the ships that were found in Mainz as well on how life in the roman fleet. It is a pleasant museum and it is free.

I was very disappointed by my visit. Most of the exhibits are replica with just a small handful of actual artefacts. 90% of the accompanying texts and signs were in German - and so technical that I struggled to understand much with my four years of German at school in hand. The place was almost empty and no staff engaged... More

While the remains of the actual ships are limited (mostly the bottoms or hulls), it's some of the only Roman ships of this period that have been found. The reconstructed versions are well done and really help you understand what the craft might have been like. I'm also adding some photos because there's a lot of material beyond the ships... More

This is about a block from the DB Roman Theater station Mainz. Which is a good place to begin or end a day trip to Mainz. This amazing museum is FREE. It is newer and has some interesting displays of archeological finds. They rebuilt Roman type ships from model size, to full size. There are articles and replicas from the... More

Highly recommended modern museum where you get a good insight in ship constructions especially Roman. Very informative displays of technological details. Likely also fun for kids.

We read about this museum in a guidebook but never expected it to be as great as it is. Basically, it's small-, medium-, and large-size replicas of Roman river warships in a spectacular modern, well-lit setting. We had no idea that Roman warships sailed as far north as the English Channel and then down the Rhine, making its river headquarters... More
