Nice park! Enjoy a walk, run or picnic
Mar 2020 • Solo
I took the metro to the park. There are 2 stations. From Gruga/Messe West it is only a few steps to the park.
I enjoyed my early morning run here. I could just go through the gate without paying a fee. The park is beautiful! You can walk, run, place. Enjoy the water, statues and nature. For the kids there are trampolines and playgrounds.
You can enjoy a coffee or snack at one of the bistros.
It is nice to walk by the Ronald McDonald Haus designed by the architect Hundertwasser.
There is also a path especially created for wheelchairs/strollers.

Like Jurassic Park Except You Won't Get Eaten!
Oct 2019
So what to do on a cold, wet, and rainy day in Germany. The obvious answer is to drink beer. However, I found Grugapark. This place is awesome. It sort of reminded of Jurassic Park because of its sheer size. However, like the stuff at the Pirates of the Caribbean, I was in no danger of being eaten. The grounds are simply massive. Flowers and trees of every variety. I loved the tall pine trees that looked like sequoias from the American Northwest. There is a conifer with very funky branches, and even palm trees growing in Germany. Since it is fall, there were pumpkin carving tables for families. This park has it all. They even have a Ronald McDonald House here and a place that specializes in miniature train sets; however, that has another entrance fee. Speaking of trains, there is also a mini train that runs through the park. This park has everything, like beer tents, lots of food for sale, and a farmer's market. There are plenty of farm animals to enchant the kids as well as a big lake with lots of ducks, swans, geese and egrets. They also have a house filled with stuffed animals, not the kind you play with. They had a wild boar, birds of prey, deer, elk, and a moose. You will certainly not be board here. The beautiful flowers alone are worth seeing. It costs four euros to get in, but it is worth every penny.

It is a must to visit Grugapark!
Jul 2019 • Couples
If because of any reason you landed in Essen - it is a must to visit Grugapark. All year there is something to see: flowers, birds, some animals. In summer people are coming to take sunbath, in winter / spring Grugapark organizes a week with Light effects. Time to time there are events (classical music).
Grugapark stays my favorite place in the city (entrance price is also ok), strongly recommend!

Beautiful place to spend time
Jun 2019
I was astonished by the number of features. While it is quite popular, the area of the park can handle a lot of visitors without the crowded feeling. The landscape is simply breathtaking at times. I was surprised to find quite a few aviaries in the park. I liked parrots the most :).

Excellent variety

This park is huge with all kinds of parts to it.There is an excellent children's area with playgrounds and a petting zoo. Then there are wonderful garden areas for adults as well. The park is vast though. We got lost and took ages to find our way out so probably a good idea to use GPS!

Thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will return.
Aug 2019
We took our toddler, our toy poodle (on a fixed length dog lead) and an overseas visitor to this park today for a few hours (6 euros per adult entry fee). It was a cloudy day with rain threatening so the park was nice and quiet. I wish we had planned to be at the park for longer though becasue it was really nice, beautiful gardens and enough to keep our little one busy; we only saw about a quarter of it. Our little one enjoyed a pony ride for 2 euros (2 rounds), petting the goats and sheep, watching the train come past (we didn't go on it this time), playing on the numerous playgrounds (although we didn't get to the toddler one), seeing the parrots, eating an ice-cream, running on the grass, seeing the owls, looking at the sculptures. We look forward to returning again soon to see and do more! We'll plan a lot longer than the 2 hours we spent there. (The animals we saw looked well cared for, their enclosures were clean, the petting zoo had someone looking out for the animals and a space for the animals to move to if they needed a break. Obviously it's nicer to see owls and birds in the wild but these birds also seemed well cared for, clean enclosures etc.)
