This giant Gothic cathedral, which until its completion in 1880 had been under construction for over 500 years, is perhaps Germany's most famous religious structure and includes two huge towers that serve as the defining symbol of Cologne's skyline.

A must see for anyone going to Cologne or passing near by. Very peaceful place to be. Gets very busy even on very cold days ! (which it very much was !)

Incredible height to this Cathedral. Which a visit to the roof via many steps up a spiral stairway further confirms. A visit to the vault rooms room to see the Cathedral's treasures is also worthwhile. Here you can also see the foundations of the building...More

This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen both inside and out. Its right up there with Notre Dame in Paris and St. Pete's in Rome. The exterior architecture is amazing and the inside is breathe taking.

This is the place to hang out during the Christmas season. They have a Christmas market set up at night where you can spend money to your heart's content on drinks, food and Christmas items. Inside the church, the tall ceilings and interior will just...More

Came to Cologne just for the Dom. Although there is a nice riverside boardwalk, lots of squares, shopping, and pubs to visit the Dom is the real reason to visit. Be sure to visit not only during the day taking time for the inside and...More

Beautiful church, standing proudly in the middle of lots of restaurants and bars. Nice to see some history amongst the rush.

It is the center of all things Cologne. Take 15 minutes or 3 hours. It is large and amazing. Say a friendly prayer for me.

No matter why you're staying in Cologne, you should at least pop over to the cathedral. On the inside and out it's absolutely stunning, especially its beautiful stained glass windows. When my partner and I went in the afternoon there was barely a queue; inside...More

Probably the first thing you'll see when you're in Cologne, and not without reason. It is a beautiful and immense building, that is definitely worth a visit. Awe-inspiring!

Overwhelming structure with beautiful stained glass. Second only to the cathedral in Rome. If you are traveling with children it is a must see from the historical stand point

Is there a hand railing for the spiral staircase? Are the mentioned "tight spaces" possibly a challenge for a 6ft 9 in. 65yr old man with some balance issue. I am a regular walker and many times have a very hills and valleys route. We do the Cathedral in mid-April 2017. thanks for the feedback!

Yes there is a rail which goes to the TOP. you can pause and rest where you can witness a big bell and the view from the top. As some one mentioned it is a long slog but worth it All the best.

we would like to visit the cathedral during our train trip from Koblenz to Brugge. We have to change trains in Cologne. How much time would it take to get off the train, use the luggage storage and tour the cathedral before our next train to Brussels?

Cologne Cathedral Staircase Question - how difficult are the steps to the Dom roof and how is the pace. We will be headed to Cologne with a Viking cruise and are interested. We are healthy and take day hikes in local parks, but want to make sure we don't hold up the line with the large number of steps - it seems so worth it though

The stairs are fairly steep and most of the way up is via a spiral staircase. It's fair to say it is quite a slog but eminently manageable. If you can, I would advise going first thing in the morning when fewer people are... More
