Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The museum is located in the central area of Hannover. It was opened in 1979 and named after the Sprengel family who donated a large collection of modern art. Also the state of Lower Saxony and the city of Hannover were large contributors to the museum.

It is a large museum with a huge and interesting collection. Unfortunately a large part of it was not accessible during our visit due to ongoing fire protection measures. In spite of these limitations we enjoyed our visit and look forward to visiting again after the renovation.

It was nice, I just wish that I would have known upfront that the basement was closed. I would also suggest creating more sitting areas for the disabled/old/pregnant/tired people amongst us.

Gallery was really good with a nice collection of contemporary art but unfortunately at the time of our visit the basement gallery was being changed over.
It didn’t stop us enjoying our visit though.
The adjoining restaurant was also good.

I am not a modern art lover and I admit I decided to visit this museum just because it was too cold to walk around Maschsee I originally planed. But I don't regret. Although I didn't like most of the art work I admired the building itself, its lighting and the way whole exhibition is organized. It was definitelly not a lost time and if the staff was a bit friendlier I even would say I enjoyed.

Visit to Hannover for us should include Kurt Schwitters art. And, there is plenty to see with respect to his collages, some paintings and sculptures / assemblages. Standing in reconstruction of "Merz-bau" is special. More space and air than expected from old photo (had included this image in review, as Drager Meurtant in Axon Journal Issue 9 on Assemblage). Very fine exhibition "Goraiko" with photos and movie by Fiona Tan. Contemporary Art section was just in part open: Dieter Roth, Niki de Saint Phalle, "Kabinett der Abstrakten" (Lissitski), and work from other artists active in 2nd half of 20th century. Also the movie exhibition "Spectral Afterlives" by Bjoern Melhus in basement, which is a bit 'lost'. One should be a 'fan' to appreciate this work.

A place you should not miss, when in Hannover is the Sprengel Museum.
It has free entry on fridays and a superb art collection.
A skull decorated by Niki de Saint Phalle and many other pieces of art.
The Dada Art collection is amazing , especially the Merz Bau recreated.
To really imagine it, you need to stand in there.

As fan of the German expressionists this museum was on my list for a long time. The visit was overwhelming. We enjoyed every minute of it. Don't forget to read all the explanation on the wall!

The museum and it’s collection are average - not bad at all, but the service was absolutely afwul and unfriendly.

It's really a well laid out museum with several interesting exhibits. Was not expecting to see a Picasso today, much less pieces by Edvard Munch. Well done!
