A superb chronicle of our sport of gliding.
Oct 2021
A fascinating place to visit. I am a keen glider pilot and much of our sport has roots in Germany. (There are parallels with soccer since much of soccer's roots lie in the UK yet the Germans frequently beat us at our own game. In gliding we frequently beat the Germans at their own game!) The Deutches Segelflugmuseum chronicles the growth of gliding in Germany since its inception over 100 years ago. Many of the famous people have a place of honour and practically all of the aircraft on display are German. In another posting, somebody complains of this but there is a clue in the name of the museum! If you want to know about the history of gliding in the UK, visit the Gliding Heritage Centre at Lasham.
The museum is well laid out and comprehensive. We only had a couple of hours to visit the place and that was sufficient but you could spend much more time becoming more deeply immersed.
It is somewhere that every serious glider pilot should visit, at least once in their lives.

A fabulous visit for the aviation enthusiast
Sep 2019
This is a superb museum which focuses on the history of gliding in Germany where the sport of gliding was invented, in essence here at Wasserkuppe. The museum is well laid out with an excellent range of replica and original aircraft. The staff, though limited in English, were helpful and friendly. There is an enormous amount of information available on billboards and placards - but it is all in German; fortunately the audioguide's English language channel is excellent and a must. We planned on a visit of a couple of hours but as an enthusiast that turned into a half-day - the superb cafe at Peterchens Mondfahrt is only metres away for refreshment or waiting for less enthusiastic family members.

A very rare museum for sailplanes and model aircrafts... but only germans
Aug 2016 • Family
This museum present an unique collection of very rare sailplanes in the Wasserkuppe, the german Mecca for gliders. Most of the gliders are very rare and some are still airworthy, Obviously the hangars are too small for the collections and I could not visit the restauration workshop (I visited a sunday). One suggestion, the explanations board could be translated in english or french. This will allow a more international minded museum. Now it feels too much focused on germans for the germans. The content and the collections desserve to be better known outside germany.
