A Just OK History Museum in the Heart of Frankfurt

I hadn't planned on going to this museum, but I stumbled onto it while walking around the old part of town and it was free that day so I went inside. It was interesting and there... read more

Located inside a former 13th century fortress on the banks of the Main River, this museum presents events, personages and artifacts from 800 years ago to the present day. All of the exhibits are accompanied with English translations and logically organized. There are 5 floors along with carefully restored passageways and tower turrets used during the Middle Ages. The museum... More

Historisches Museum stands next to Frankfurt am Main. Founded in 1878, it showcases cultural and historical exhibits that relate to the history of Frankfurt and Germany. From the Mediaeval Era, the Late Middle Ages, the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the nineteenth-century city to modern history from 19th Century onwards, spend 1 to 1.5 hours to experience the historical changes here.

I hadn't planned on going to this museum, but I stumbled onto it while walking around the old part of town and it was free that day so I went inside. It was interesting and there were some cool displays with both English and German signs in a lot of the museum (though not all). There's 800 years of German... More

I am still trying to work out what motivated the museum organisers to set the museum up this way: the collection is displayed according the collectors who originally contributed it to the museum, which is of limited interest to anyone beyond a specialist in the art of museum collections. Frankfurt's fascinating and long history barely gets a look in, beyond... More

The museum is near the Romerplatz. Entry is 7 Euro for adults, students are 3,50. We like history, so this was very interesting to us. About 5 stories of exhibits about Frankfurt's history, plus some exhibits of personal collections of individuals associated with Frankfurt, and artwork. There is a toll tower with the museum which you can go inside of... More

This museum is actually in the middle of a major reconstruction project, which is sorely needed. It is in a building 800 years old, with way too many twists and turns to understand and navigate. It seems to be only partly open. There are some views into excavated foundations, replicas of the crown, orb and scepter of the Holy Roman... More

To put it bluntly, they should pay you for visiting this museum. I find the name of the museum very inaccurate as what you will find is countless miniature paintings, some old coins and blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. I understand that I visited the museum at a time when it was under renovation, but as the parts open for public had... More

This is a great place to learn about the history of the city of Frankfurt. I spent about two hours exploring the different exhibitions. My favorite was the one about the way in which the street plan of Frankfurt has changed over the years

It has unusually many kind of exibits since most of the collection is donated to the city. The collection of minture paintings are impressive but not the Chinese blue porcelin which is not high quality....

What a great museum. Every floor had an interesting exhibit. From knights armour, coins, furniture, pill boxes, 50's or so medicine boxes and more interesting articles. Even the stairway is interesting. Don't miss the ruins in the basement!
