About
In this unique structure on the banks of the Spree River, the Berlin City Museum presents artefacts related to the culture and history of the city. It hosts the new permanent exhibition "BerlinZEIT - compact history", alongside with new space for temporary special exhibitions. An easily understandable overview of Berlin's history from the ice age to the present day is presented, furthermore there's a in-depth historical-cultural content as well as places to rest. The exhibition [Test]Spaces offer more new outlooks, giving exciting insights into the work that that is done at the museum.

Good history insights
Oct 2021 • Solo
At the time of my visit on a Friday afternoon, there were very few visitors to the museum, but a lot of staff. So I felt slightly strange and very much watched by the staff present all over the place as a nearly lone visitor. Also, the COVID-19 protection measures were a bit confusing (where are you supposed to walk, in which direction etc.) And due to changes to the exhibition, only part of it was accessible. Nevertheless, the museum offers a good insight into the history of Berlin!

Very interesting but the organization is not so good

The museum it's very interesting to understand how Berlin has born and developed, but the staff really lack of professionality.
The museum has many very small rooms that due to this COVID-19 situation can be entered just from very few people at the time, so it is a continuous waiting for the "go" from staff members.
At the entrance, they will give you one plastic glove (there are some buttons to press in order to play short movies and other stuff), and obviously after a few minutes your hand would be really sweaty.

Great Museum of Berlin culture and history with limited time special exhibitions
Aug 2019
The Märkisches Museum has been recently renovated for both permanent and special exhibitions. It was built in the early 1900s and, by the way, has nothing to do with Marxism unless there is a special exhibition about East Berlin. It is easily reached with the U-Bahn U2 line (Berlin subway) and the stop is also called Märkisches Museum. It is then just a short walk down a nice tree-lined street to the museum. The museum includes everything from coins, weapons, art, models, sculptures, and every day life in Berlin's history. It also includes the Kaiserpanorama, which is a 3D stereoscope from the 1880s. If you are interested in Berlin's history and culture, then this museum is a great place to visit.

Really worth a visit
Jan 2020
A lovely old building houses a great museum all about Berlin. Lots of history, interactive exhibits, models etc to keep the interest going on the way round and to take you through hundreds of years of Berlin from small town to today. It was extremely well done.

If time is short...

There are so many museums in this city that it is difficult to prioritise. This one is housed in a beautiful, historic building and gives a very comprehensive history of the city in a reasonably compact space. We received a very warm welcome, were given audio equipment as part of the entrance fee and directed to the starting point and the written documentation on the artefacts displayed in the first room. In each of the following rooms, there was always a helpful member of staff who could enlarge on the information provided and we never felt as if we were being herded along. The city's history is brought right up to the present day and presented with honesty and humility. If there is little time for museum visits and the choice difficult to make, during your stay, you could do a lot worse than opt for this one, which summarises Berlin in a very pleasant two or three hour experience.

Very well presented

Get to museum either by U Bahn (name of muesuem) or S Bahn Jannowitzbrucke. Lovely building converted into a museum. Helpful staff who guide you around. The exhibits are spread over three floors so make sure you see all that is on offer. The cafe wasn't open when we visited. All in, it took us 3 hours to go around. A good mix of artefacts to see including new discoveries such as those from the U5 extension for Rote Rathaus.

A very good museum. However it is poorly signposted within the Museum and the history goes backwards in time. Very confusing!
Consequently we feel we missed some of the displays.
Whole periods of time was missed.

Thanks for the feedback. We’ve chosen 18 key moments of the Berlin history starting with the ice age till the present days. Looks like we missed to show you the correct starting point of the tour. We’ll work on this, so thanks again for your remarks.

Set in a beautiful medieval monestir, the collection of the Maerkisches Museum offers a great summary of the history of this 800 year old city which is Berlin.

Good Without Being Overwhelming
Jun 2019 • Solo
For someone who wants a short lesson on the history of Berlin, this is a good museum. It's well laid out and interesting, and it's located in a beautiful building. There were times when I wished more information had been provided on a particular subject, but it's clear that the target market is not the historian but rather the person with a casual interest in history. The audioguides are good and are available in English and German. Despite the weather outside being terribly warm, I was comfortable in the museum and left only after my feet got tired (after about two hours). The staff were not overly friendly but neither were they rude. I can't understand what some of the other reviewers meant by the museum needing a refurbishment. I thought it was great just the way it was.

Ready for its refurbishment
May 2019 • Solo
Apparently this museum is to be closed in 2021 for a refurbishment.Boy does it need it.When I came in I was met with a rather indifferent attitude. There was nowhere to be found an indication of how much the ticket cost. The exhibits in the galleries did not grip my interest. There was little about World War 1.Eventually I got to 1933.There was a gallery showing the rise of Hitler. The next gallery was for 1945 onwards. So all the devastation and it's consequences were ignored.Instead there was a lot about the division of Germany.Very disappointing.

Thanks for the rating. All prices are displayed on a big poster outside the main entrance and next to the cashier. It is 7€/4€ reduced. The permanent exhibition “BerlinZEIT - compact history” focuses on 18 key moments of Berlins history. We highly recommend the free audio guide, as an supportive element of storytelling. We are sorry you didn’t find what you expected. We’ll take this feedback very serious. Hope to see you soon again and maybe meet your expectations then.
