One of the main sites on museum island which is a really joy but exhausting if you try and visit all site on one day. A multi museum pass is a better bet - go see 'the thinker' and some of the other bronzes

Another of the fabulous museums located on Museum Island. We love the Alte Nationalgalerie - the building itself is a work of art and the gorgeous art within (on 3 levels) spans art from classic to modernist. The impressionist collection on the second level is amazing.

We visited the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) in Berlin having read many positive reviews. First stop was the cafe in the shop. It was VERY small and had a limited selection of drinks and food. It looks like part of the small shop. It would have been better to grab some breakfast before getting there early to beat the... Exquisite paintings in different styles, from french impressionism to classic ones. I enjoyed Friedrich and Schinkel in particular. Being students we had free entry but I think that even paying 5/10€ it's a good compromise. Do not miss it!

We visited this gallery and were impressed by the collection of art dating from the 18th c. The Impressionists, Neo Classical and Romantic movements are well represented, and contains world class works by Manet and Monet among others, as well as the largest collection of Adolphe Menzel paintings in the world.

The place to come to have the history of art explained. Such stunning art, so much to see. Take your time, it's almost easy to get overwhelmed.

Great collection of german artists, but only one (and a half) room was showcasing the French impressionists and I was hoping for some more...at least more description and history. The architecture and the interior design is great! And the way the paintings are presented (incl. lightning and distribution) is excellent.

If you love impressionists you will love this museum. It was interesting to see the German artists that were showcased.

My 2nd visit to the museum. It is small, nice and with interesting collection of French impressionism. I must say I was there because of them - Monet, Renoir, Cezanne... There is a big German collection of Romantics too. I had a museumpass, so I did not pay anything. I do recommend along other museums on museum island.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
