Many music critics call this the best symphony orchestra in the world. Even those who quibble about the top spot admit the Berliner Philharmonie ranks right up there. The hall was state-of-the-art c. 1960 and still offers fine acoustics, in addition to its strikingly strange exterior. Go on a night when the Philharmonie itself is performing, preferably with Sir Simon Rattle on the podium. Although elfin in stature, he embodies an exuberant conducting style that makes him a show in himself. On the night we could get tickets, the program was Haydn's Synphonie No. 102 and Stravinsky's Journey -- neither of them on our list of favorites. But that didn't matter. The performance was brilliant.

A visit to Berliner Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal, Russian pianist Mogilewky´s piano recital, Chopin Nocturnes, Ballads and part of the 1st piano concerto.

The pianist was phenomenal. Timo, hose birthday we celebrated as well as my other guests, enjoyed the concert.

As always, a great treat to visit the Berlin Philharmonie!
The building's emblematic profile is a well known landmark in the former West Berlin. Inaugurated in 1963, it has been the home of the Berliner Philharmoniker ever since. And is strongly associated with its, then and for many years, chief conductor Herbert von Karajan.
The building itself is well worth the visit. In the "Großer saal" you can practically sit anywhere and get both good views and good acoustics.

And if you attend a concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker, it really doesn't matter what it is on the programme... this world famous orchestra is in the absolute top leauge of symphony orchestras in the world. Amongst the top six...

The place was packed at lunchtime but there was plenty of room to sit on the floor and everyone had a good view of the musicians. Good acoustics also, and this was a highlight of our Berlin trip. A cheap and cheerful lunch was also on offer before and after the concert, which was especially welcome as we hadn't had time to eat.

WOW! I recently saw/heard Kirill Petrenko (the new conductor) lead the orchestra in a concert of pieces by Stravinsky, Zimmermann, and Rachmaninoff, and it was magnificent. Always wanted to hear a concert of the Berliner in Berlin, and now that box is ticked. The performance was tight and lively...extremely well-rehearsed. I am told that Petrenko is a bit of a perfectionist, and it certainly seems to have paid off. He is full of vitality--was able to watch his face because I was sitting on the right side of the orchestra pit...lots of fun. The concert hall itself is fabulous...great sound...visually stunning...audience sits all around the pit...everyone seemed happy sitting around me. You can buy tickets online...though I popped over to the box office one day, and there was a free concert happening in the lobby led by the current concertmaster--very nice. Listened to this, bought my tickets, and saw my full concert the next evening...wunderbar! You will not be disappointed by any aspect of the Berliner Philharmoniker experience...go...enjoy!

I was going to describe the Berlin Phil as the Roll-Royce of classical music, but it has to be a top of the range Merc, doesn't it. The hall was one of the first built in a modern style and offers great sight lines and acoustics. We heard the Orchestra perform Beethoven and Mahler - just fabulous. Unmissable!
