About
The Pergamonmuseum is a three-wing complex. The museum houses three of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s collections: the Antikensammlung, Vorderasiatisches Museum, and the Museum für Islamische Kunst. The impressive reconstructions of massive archaeological structures – the Pergamon Altar, Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way from Babylon, and the Mshatta Facade – have made the Pergamonmuseum famous throughout the world, with the result that it is the most visited museum at the Staatliche Museen and in Germany as a whole.

One of the most interesting museums I ever visited. The way they reconstructed the gates is remarkable. I was very impressed. Cannot wait to visit again once the renovations are finished.

The museum is still very impressive but, if you see it once, wait until 2025 when it is fully opened. I was here in 2002 and it was a highlight of a month backpacking, but now half the museum is being renovated. Hopefully, by then, they will have also fine-tuned their admissions also.

I’m sure it’s a great museum but we had a pretty annoying experience we tried twice to go to the museum first on a Monday only to find none of the museums on Museum Island are actually open!?
We then tried to visit on the Tuesday only to be told you could only buy tickets on a timeslot basis and there are no timeslots now left for the next two days!
This wasn’t clear on the website nor did anyone tell us when we enquired at the museum the day before
A little bit annoying
I also noted that some of the main exhibitions are on display due to renovation work so maybe we didn’t miss quite as much?

Even if you are not deeply interested in ancient history, you simply have to come here on any trip to Berlin. Just walking through the Babylonian Processional Way, though to the Miletus Market, is an amazing experience and leaves you awe-struck.
The reconstructed Ishtar Gate should be as well-known as the Great Pyramid - it is a miracle to have survived and it is a privilege to be walking through such a legendary collection. I came here 3 years ago and have just visited again, coming from the UK for this reason alone, it's that good!

The Pergamon is full of fascinating items and displays from throughout history. Despite part of the museum being renovated there is still plenty to see and a visit shouldn’t be rushed.
The Ishtar and Miletos gates in particular were stunning. It’s unusual to see such massive historical artefacts on display in a museum and they really help you visualise life in those eras.
The staff could have been a bit more helpful when we arrived as it wasn’t obvious that you had to go downstairs and stow your bag/coat before picking up an audio guide and then getting your ticket and Covid vaccination status checked. Seemed a bit odd that they would do things in that order as what’s the point if you have the wrong ticket/status?

What I enjoyed most about this museum is that it wasn't very exhausting to see all of the exhibits. The collection inside is gorgeous, but it feels quicker to get through than say, visiting the bigger and famous museums. Make sure you get your COVID vaccine digital pass at the pharmacy before going to the Pergamon museum, or you'll lose about an hour of time like I did!

If you only have time for one museum, this is the museum to go. The reconstructed town of Pergamon and the items they used back in those days are very interesting

Definitely book ahead as it was fully booked the first day we tried to go. Highly recommend using the audio guide as well as it really enhances the experience. I couldn't believe I was seeing the ishtar gates. So much incredible history and the exhibits are really well done so you learn the back story. the collection, the collectors as well as the history of the artefact itself.

I gave this one star only because I had to in order to write this review. If the Pergamon staff reads, this, I’d appreciate an email or phone call. We tried to visit the Pergamon on 10 Oct, but we’re denied entry because we did not have a timeslot ticket in addition to the 3-Day ticket purchased online. This requirement was not mentioned when purchasing the 3-day ticket. After checking the website afterwards, it is mentioned only if you purchase a Pergamon single day ticket. Horrible IT, although should have known by now after living in Germany for over 2 years. Staff at the ticket counter was unhelpful, refused to ask guidance from manager, refused to offer an alternative and refused to refund our money because “they would lose money.” She mentioned that all the time slots were reserved on 8 Oct and next available was 12 Oct, so we couldn’t possibly have scheduled as 8 Oct was our travel day and we depart on 11 Oct. I saw this happen to another American family, too. Seemed like anti-Americanism, what is going on in Berlin? I sent an email to have our money returned, but knowing Germany, we’ll never see it…

It is planned to reopen on 2024. In the meantime, there is an interesting exhibition on it which you can visit ( for an additional fee) in a building nearby. Nice 3d exhibit and panorama with statues, bas reliefs and other altar ornaments.

Scusate...ho letto che l'altare di Pergamo è ancora in ristrutturazione. Quindi non lo si può vedere? Ed eventualmente, sono altre limitazioni per altre opere in restauro? Grazie a chi risponderà.

Dear Luciana,
yes it's is the right that the Pergamon Altar can't be seen until the renovations will be finished. The north wing and the gallery of Hellenistic art will also be closed. The artefacts from Uruk and Habuba Kabira, as well as the rooms with Babylonian, ancient Iranian, and Sumerian monuments, are also currently inaccessible to the public. Additionally, several objects in the Vorderasiatisches Museum have been removed from their display cases for safekeeping during the construction work. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Nethertheless: The south wing of the Pergamonmuseum – which features the Ishtar Gate, the Processional Way, the Museum für Islamische Kunst, and the Market Gate of Miletus – will remain open to the public. And there is the "Pergamonmuseum. The Panorama", that takes visitors back to the year AD 129, showing the ancient city of Pergamon on the west coast of Asia Minor, which shows the Pragamon Altar in its original context.
A hint: Due to capacity limits and in order to avoid long queues we are offering entry to the Pergamonmuseum with timed tickets only. If you plan your visit, you can get your free timed tickets online on our website.
So we hope, you will enjoy your stay at Pergamonmuseum. :)
Kind regards from the Social Media Team of the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin

Salve! volevo comprare la berlin card e vorrei sapere se l'ingresso al museo è gratis o c'è uno sconto per i possessori della card. grazie
Staatl_MuseenBerlin

Dear carlottad, there is a special "Berlin Welcomcard Museumsinsel" which gives free entrance to all 5 museums on the Museumsinsel. With the "Berlin Welcomcard" there is just a discount on the entrance fee. If you are planning to visit the Pergamonmuseum, here is a hint: Currently, with the Pergamonmuseum undergoing refurbishments, the Museumsinsel’s new reception building is the only entry point to the Pergamonmuseum. For security reasons, only 550 people are allowed to visit the museum at any one time. In order to avoid long queues, from now on, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is offering entry to the Pergamonmuseum with timed tickets only.
If you plan to visit all museums, check out which day you want to visit. The "Alte Nationalgalerie", the "Altes Museum" and the "Bode-Museum" are not open on mondays.
Kind Regards! The Social Media Team of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin :)

Hello,
yes it is right that the Pergamon Altar is still in renovation. You can have look at our website, there you can see a 3D model of the Altar, which is also shown on screens in the exhibition of Pergamonmuseum.
Since 2018 we have another attraction, the temporary exhibition building "Pergamonmuseum. The Panorama". The 360° Panorama shows the city of Pergamon in Roman times (ca. 129 CE). Kind Regards!

Ciao! Quanto costa il ticket per entrare solo in questo museo? Io sono studentessa universitaria (ma non ho la isic card) di 25 anni, posso godere di qualche sconto?
Staatl_MuseenBerlin
Berlin, Germany
Dear 30SimoR,
have a look at our webside for Concessions - you can find it by search also in englisch language.
The reduced rate is generally 50% of the admission fee. The reduced rate applies to schoolchildren, students, those engaged in national or community service, unemployed persons claiming „ALG I“ job-seekers’ allowance, and severely disabled persons (with at least 50% reduction in earning capacity), on presentation of the appropriate identification.
Please note: the Pergamonmuseum is being renovated. For safety reasons only 550 people are allowed to stay there at the same time. In order to avoid long waiting times for visitors, we are now offering admission to the Pergamon Museum only with a time window ticket. So we recommend to buy a ticket for the Pergamonmuseum and Asisi Panorama online and in advance. We hope you will enjoy your stay!
Best regards
Your team of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
