Perhaps I didn't get to see the Gate in all its prime glory due to a protest, but I wasn't overly impressed. Maybe I should've gone at night to see it lit up.

Has to be seen, of course, but nothing special for me. On way to Reichstag , and close to Holocaust memorial so no need for separate trip.

We had a very unusual experience of the Brandenburg Gate area. Everything was closed down with extreme security - Thanks to the visiting Mr Obama! However the quiet and lack of traffic added to the visit. Shame we couldn't buy a coffee to enjoy!

As I have been travelling ot Berlin since 1974, before reunification I was excited to visit Brandenburg Tor and walk through. Although it was nice to say I had finally achieved this, was a bit underwhelmed by the whole atmosphere. Picture the time 1989 during unification and the emotions then, nothing like that now, mind you, I haven't been for... More

Start at the Haubtbanohff Station and walk to Reich Stad go to the dome at the top for marvelous views over Berlin. Then cut through the park to the Brandeberg Gate. Take in the sights on the way stopping for a coffe or lunch at one of the many cafes. Walk all the way down to Alexander Platz for a... More

Well, as city gates go, this is up there with the best. On your walking tour of Berlin (or on the bus) you must get here.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
