Visited here twice, once in daylight and then at night time as its almost like seeing two different tourist attractions. The gate itself is very impressive, can't say the same about the surroning area apart from the Reichstag which is 2 minutes walk away and then further on to tiergarten park.

Hitler and Napoleon have marched through this gate. It's seen the ravages of WW2 and the Berlin Wall. The Hop on Hop off bus stops here as well. Most of the sights of Berlin are close to each other though and the Reichstag is just over the road from here.

A must see visit if in Berlin, beautiful architecture and of great historical significance throughout the history of Germany (Prussia)......known as the gateway to Berlin, Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin have marched/ridden through there besides royal families of different countries and nationalities, overlooking the french embassy to the left(german sense of humour, after defeating Napoleon )and the most prestigious and expensive... This was our first visit to Berlin and we loved it. The sights and experience were excellent and the people were very friendly and helpful. There were so many familiar names of locations and streets to see and the city is so beautiful - even in December! We walked most places and then took transport back to the hotel, using... More

Magnificent architecture and an historic icon. It was incredible to consider the history that had walked in front of us, through the gates. Beautiful weather. Great views on either side of the gate. It really is spectacular and a sight which will be etched in your memory.

I didn't get to stay very long to see the gate because it was bitterly cold. The gate itself was impressive but surrounding it were the monstrosity that was the US Embassy and the French Embassy. Nothing could be more jarring.than a neoclassical 18th century monument surrounded by horrible modem concrete buildings. The symbolism of this arrangement is unmistakable. This... More

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
