I did almost every tour on offer from sandemans while I was in Berlin, including the Third Reich (Sam), Red Berlin (Rob. M), Sauchenhausen (Lizzy) and beer (Jason) tours. All of the guides were interesting, informative and friendly, I would definitely recommend it as the best way to see and learn about the history of the city in a short... More

We did three tours through this company. The first was the general tour with Franziska. Her English was excellent, and she clearly knew the city in and out. She was a very engaging speaker. This covered some of the major history points of the city, and gives you a good taster. We then did the Red tour with Lewis which... More

We have been touring round Europe for 3 weeks and have done numerous tours, this tour with Rob Shaw is an absolute highlight! He made the tour informative and engaging and relatable with some wonderfully timed humor. Rob made this not only the best tour we have done but also one of the most memorable experiences we will have whilst... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our free walking tour with Lewis. Even with below freezing temps and snow, it was a nice time! Loved the history and humor, and ya can't beat the price. We already booked another one of the tours Sandemans offers here in Berlin. This is a must do as a tourist. Don't forget cash to tip!

I went on three tours with this group. The free walking tour, the sachsenhausen concentration camp tour, and the Third Reich tour (my personal favorite). All of them were extremely interesting, entertaining, and fantastic!!!!!! I can't recommend these tours enough. They are very well priced and definitely worth every penny. For the first two tours we had the tour guide... More

Our guide who was extremely knowledgeable took us on an interesting meander through Berlin. We enjoyed it but weren't blown away, possibly due to not having the most engaging guide. I must stress though that he did have a fantastic knowledge of Berlin and didn't falter at all on any questions presented by the group.

The tour guides are absolutely amazing, especially Rob Shaw. We went on the free walking tour suggested by our hostel and by the end we had signed up for two more tours. Rob was personable and a great story teller. He weaves together a compelling narrative of the history of this country, its impact on the people here, and the... More

I took the Walking, Communist and Concentration Camp tours and they were all great! The tour guides Tall Lewis, Rob Willis and the lovely guy from the Netherlands (sorry I forgot your name :( but you threw a great communist tour) were all amazing. Very knowledgable and quick to answer questions. Having done Sandemans tours in other countries and knowing... More

Me and my friend had that lovely oportunity to have Georgia on our Concentration Camp Sashenhause tour in Berlin. If you don't want only to see the things but also feel them, you will love her! She even recited a very touchingly poem at the end of it and we all just froze.. After the tour she helped us on... More

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
