This was my top momment at Wurzburg i was really surprised. The chappel is absolutly unique. Its a litle magic place with lots of lovely details on the inside. There was a lady playing the organ when we were there and that made it even more special. I would love to do some special celebration in there. Not really easy when in germain for what i heard you need to give 9% for your salary. So..i will keep dreaming about that😂

Beautiful chapel

The chapel is very ornate and beautiful and I would imagine on a beautiful day you will get a grand view of the city below but we went there on a rainy day and nothing seemed amazing...

Typically baroque, but uniquw

This unique little chapel, astonishing with its two round couples and the unexpected rich interior between baroque and rococo is the conding destination after a wonderful hike up the mountain. First you hike up through a forest, then, you climb the stairs of a 14 stations crossway. A hidden jewel of the historical rich city of Wuerzburg.

Well worth the hike up

The walk up will take you through the stations of the cross which allows you to catch your breath! I counted the steps and there were 329 to the top! The views from the top were outstanding...especially across the way to the Fortress. I was shocked to find there was no easy way to get to the Fortress from here on foot. You have to go back down and to the bridge to start your way up to the Fortress! Crazy. They are so close! I was also disappointed that I could not go inside as there was a wedding in process.

The name of this small church by the local people is Kaeppele. This wonderful building was planed by Balthasar Neumann from 1748-1750. This is one of the finest churches
from Wurzburg, highly decorated with an wonderful fresco and you have a great view over the landscape gratis.

Wonderful view of the city and the fortress. Take the steps and contemplate the beautiful statues from 1778 illustrating the 14 stations of the cross. Beautiful chapel.

How you arrive is important - accessible by car but better on foot if possible. We walked from near the Alte Mainbrücke along the Saalgasse, then up the steep hill on Nikolausstrasse, unfortunately missing the turn to approach the Käpelle from the north. We arrived at the rear of the chapel. We later found, and returned home, down the elaborate steep steps adorned with dozens of life-size statues and small chapels representing the stations of the cross. Try not to miss the turn on Nikolausstrasse, and if possible approach the church along the 14 stations. Keep in mind many would consider this a demanding ascent, but with many opportunities to stop, rest and admire.

Balthasar Neumann, architect of the Würzburg Residenz, designed the Käpelle. The chapel interior evolved in a Franco-Italianate Rococo manner with visually overwhelming, stunning detail requiring decades to complete beyond Neumann's lifetime. The Käpelle thankfully survived undamaged the WWII allied firebombing of Würzburg. For a chapel relatively small in size, it is clearly designed as a visually spectacular work of faith and art that should be seen, not possible to capture in words. A top consideration for any visit to Würzburg.

Stunning!
A must if you are in Wurzburg; very impressive. Time an early morning or late afternoon here, with a visit to the fort. If hiking up isn't for you, take the scenic drive.
