There are remnants of city walls throughout Europe, with a peek at an old city wall gate here or a section of wall there. But Rothenburg still has its city walls standing and available to be walked. Because of the covered walkway, the walls can...More

Being able to walk on structures built so long ago is always an impressive privilege. And this wall is no exception. Unfortunately we just stopped in Rothenburg enroute and did not have enough time to really explore it all. It's definitely worth a stop and...More

Just think about how many hundreds of years ago these walls were constructed and are still standing today! So rich in history!!

We really enjoyed walking the town walls and reading the history of the points of interest. We really appreciated that the signs were in English as well. The walls were well kept but there are low ceilings and uneven flooring and they are narrow so...More

One of the best activities -- and free -- is walking the walls. Interesting to read who had contributed to preserving the walls; all over, there would be names, dates, and no. of meters they paid to preserve. Nice.

Very few cities have walkways that take you around the city on medieval walls. Great experience to walk the walls the way medieval archers would have.

Wear comfy shoes and if your not in shape be prepared to sweat. It can get hot in the cramped area. Lots of step stairs but worth the view.

It's so cool being able to wall around a lot of the perimeter of the old city on the ancient walls. Looking down on the city from the wall gives a nice perspective.

We walked the walls and got a better feeling for the history of this old City. To get the best experience, walk them after dark, just beware of the head height and uneven paths.

Part of the wall was destroyed during WW II. The plaques are for people who donated from around the world for the wall to be rebuilt. I believe that the donation was around 1500 US dollars.

Hi Jett, My response earlier today concerned the walls of Dubrovnik. Whoops! The walls around Rothenburg ob der Tauber are open at all hours. In fact, when I visited in June 2016, I woke up at dawn due to jet lag. I'm... More

There are many places to get up onto the wall. I would recommend simply walking along the wall until you reach a staircase. There are plenty of these access points along the way.
