" Pax intrantibus, salus exeuntibus " - Peace to those who enter, heal the outward. So greets the mighty bulwark of the city fortification to its visitors. At the final of the 16th century Leonhard Weidmann created this impressive defense structure in form of a eight. Seven gates, a portcullis, a drawbridge and a rampart where pieces of artillery could... More

Had no idea about this fascinating place until I literally stumbled along it walking the Rothenburg wall. Explore the nooks & crannies, high & low, this was a highlight of the day walking.

When you imagine what defending a walled city might involve, this is the place to experience the gun and cannon ports, the narow walls and wide spaces to move cannons and supplies. But make sure you bring a tripod for your camera, since the interiors are dark and come early before the crowds arrive.

This gateway is more fortress than gate. It appears to be almost a triple gate as it has at least two courtyards in it. The architecture is fabulous and gives you a real taste for how medieval cites were built and protected. Many people do not go beyond the Siebers Tower so miss out on attractions like this.

After you find the plonlein, just keep moving ahead and you will find this big portal named Spitalbastei. Interesting hard architecture.

If you are walking the walls, do so around the bastion and give it a look. Nothing earth-shattering but it is a nice piece of architecture. Not as old as some of the city but quite nice.

Pros: Sightseeing is free Cons: None that I can think of This structure is one of the best parts of the original city wall. If you have limited time to explore the walls, explore the bastion site. You can really get a feeling for how this provided both access and protection for the city as part of the overall wall... More

The beefy structure reminded me of a squat tower surrounding a compound in itself. From the outside it was a rather impressive structure but going inside it was anything but. It was dark and uninviting, abandoned of course but if not for fellow visitors touring within, it would be a nice setting for a horror movie. The openings on the... More

Really interesting to walk around in this part of the wall. It is obviously where the defending of the town took ace. It is really the only part of the wall that does not have a precipice next to it, so there is a series of defences with a number of walled areas where cannons, archers etc could engage the... More
