The black sheep among the towers
Mar 2019 • Couples
Spital part of the town has been built at late middle ages. Due to strategic tip location they had to build entire fortress instead of small tower and gate. There is also very nice small (romantic) pedestrian bridge.
Summary: highly recommended.

I exited Rothenburg via the Spital Bastion. It was getting dark so just a quick visit. Looked very cool! Interesting architecture too!

The most beautiful gate in Rothenburg
May 2018 • Couples
This is the most beautiful and well preserved gate in the medieval town. You can even explore it inside, though you cannot climb to the top.

This place would take some penetrating

On our city wall walk we came across this massive fortified gate way and learnt later this was the last fortified gateway to the town built. This was modern for it’s time and had provision for cannons to defend the area, we walked into a doorway at one end that led to a walkway up high that went the length of the building and came out the other side, we then walked beside the grassed moat up onto the road and then through the outer gate to the inner fortified Spital Bastion. Beside the outer gate is a customs house and watch tower.
The keystone at the top of the arch on the outer gate reads as follows.
PEACE TO THOSE THAT ENTER. FAREWELL TO THOSE THAT LEAVE.
A very impressive entrance to a well fortified town .
One has to visit to take it all in and get the real feel of this lovely old town.
At this point down in the grassed moat there is a kids playground , maybe a breather for the kids and adults who need a rest from the wall .

Fortress or wall tower
Sep 2017 • Friends
Spital Bastion was one of the tower gate in the Rothenburg walled town. When you walked up and saw the moat, you would wonder if this place was a fortress or just a walkway. May be people in the medieval time used this area together with the necessary weapons to defend the outsiders. A nice place to see and think of the past history.

Superb Walled Town
Sep 2017 • Couples
An excellent walk for a different look on the town, there are steps down every so far so it very easy to stop off for a coffee and then resume your walk. the Bastion itself has some quite steep parts, and there are a couple of cannon to make it look good.

See how they defended their own
Sep 2017
Well worth a visit to see inside the bastion the steep walkway that the defenders would have to walk through. It has been restored and fascinating to look at the cramped spaces inside.

This is a pretty cool bit of the town walls, tucked off to the south end. It's a ways away from the main tourist areas, and so gets very little traffic. It's under-signed, with no real explanation of what you're seeing.

However, it's pretty much open to wander through as you like. Evenings are a nice time to visit, though I'd bring a flashlight as parts of it are unlit and well worth seeing.

The jungest and most powerful bastion

" Pax intrantibus, salus exeuntibus " - Peace to those who enter, heal the outward. So greets the mighty bulwark of the city fortification to its visitors. At the final of the 16th century Leonhard Weidmann created this impressive defense structure in form of a eight.
Seven gates, a portcullis, a drawbridge and a rampart where pieces of artillery could be moved protected the city of Rothenburg before attacks from the south. You shouldn't visit it not only from the outside but also side of the walls up to the rampart.
